Edmonton, AB - The Western Canada Under-16 Challenge Cup kicks off today from Moose Jaw, SK as the top 1996-born prospects from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba do battle in a four team tournament. The event will wrap up with the Bronze and Gold Medal games on Sunday, October 30th. A total of 80 1996-born players will suit up for their respective provincial Clubs at the tournament, 69 of whom were selected by WHL Clubs in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.
The Edmonton Oil Kings would like to congratulate their four WHL Bantam Draft picks representing their respective provinces at the tournament; Team Alberta`s Aaron Irving as well as a trio from Team B.C. - Mitchell Walter, Dysin Mayo and Mitchell Meek.
Irving, selected by the Oil Kings with the 9th overall pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft has also been named the Team Alberta Captain. The defenseman from Edmonton spent the 2010-11 season with the South Side Athletic Club's Bantam AAA squad, helping the Southgate Lions capture the provincial title. Listed at 6-foot-0 and 173 pounds he scored 18 points in 33 regular season games last year. Alberta is the defending champion of the tournament, having won the inaugural edition of the Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup in 2009. Including Irving, this year`s team boasts 10 players who were first-round picks in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.
Walter, a 5`10, 162 pound forward from South Delta, BC was selected by the Oil Kings in the second round and joins Team BC's roster of 17 players who were selected in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. This list also includes the Oil Kings third round pick Mayo and seventh round pick Meek. Walter is coming off a bantam season which saw him captain the South Delta Storm while racking up 16 goals and 15 assists in 20 games. Mayo is a 6`0 155 pound defenseman and Meek is a 5`10 170 pound defenseman - both hail from Victoria, BC and were a part of the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy last season.
