Victoria Royals News Release
Spokane, WA - In a Wednesday night matchup at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena the Victoria Royals took on the Spokane Chiefs as the Royals searched for their third straight win on the road. Victoria gave Jared Rathjen his first start in goal of his WHL career, while Spokane went with Mac Engel.
The Chiefs opened the scoring after Mitch Holmberg skated to the slot and fired a shot over the blocker of Rathjen at 2:47. Spokane increased their lead 34 seconds later after Marek Kalus found a loose puck in the crease and put it past the Royals' netminder. Victoria cut into the Chiefs' lead at 10:28 after Steven Hodges corralled a puck in the slot and backhanded the puck through the legs of Engel for his sixth of the season and fourth goal in four games. Just past the 15 minute mark of the period Spokane notched back-to-back goals 40 seconds apart from Dominik Uher and Connor Chartier to skate into the first intermission with a 4-1 lead.
The second period saw the teams exchange scoring chances for the first several minutes. At the 7:06 mark Kalus recorded his second of the night when he converted a pass from Mike Aviani. Just prior to the 10 minute mark of the frame Royals' defender Keegan Kanzig dropped the gloves with Chiefs' captain Darren Kramer. Both players landed punches before they dropped to the ice. Spokane led 5-1 after two periods.
Both teams exchanged power play opportunities for the first half of the period, but could not beat either goaltender. With seven minutes left in the game Victoria's Jesse Zgraggen squared off with Uher in the game's second fight. Uher landed a couple of early blows before the players fell to the ice. Collin Valcourt added another marker for Spokane at 14:53 to extend their lead. Chiefs 6 Royals 1
Victoria went 0/4 0.0% on the power play, while Spokane was 0/3 0.00%. The Chiefs outshot the Royals 33-13.
Victoria returns home to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre this Friday, October 28th when they open up a seven game home stand against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Game time is 7:05 p.m. For further details or to purchase your tickets today, visit the Victoria Royals Ticket Office, www.victoriaroyals.com, or call 250-220-7889.
