Team Alberta opens Challenge Cup with a win

Moose Jaw, SK - The Lethbridge Hurricanes are keeping a close watch on eight of their draft picks who are playing for Team Alberta and Team Saskatchewan at the U16 Challenge Cup. The event spotlights the highest rated players in the Under 16 age group helping to evaluate the top prospects for future Program of Excellence competitions.

Alberta's roster has four Canes draft picks, highlighted by Forward Reid Duke. Joining Duke are Tyler Wong, Reid Nemeth and in goal, Lethbridge's own Jonny Hogue. Team Alberta opened the tournament with a 6-3 win over Manitoba Thursday afternoon. Reid Duke finished with 1 goal, while Tyler Wong added 2 assists and Hogue made 28 saves. Hurricanes Assistant General Manager, Brad Robson said Wong "played very well" while Hogue "was very good in goal, particularily in the 2nd period when Manitoba outshot Alberta 16-4." As for the play of Nemeth, Robson said "he was very good on the penalty kill and the forecheck and he was used in shutting down Manitoba's top line."

Four more draft picks make up Team Saskatchewan's roster who play against B.C. tonight. The prospects making up Team Saskatchewan are Defencemen Ryan Pilon, Kolten Olynek, Carter Amson and Bryton Sayers.
