Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FREDERICK, MD- Runs were the theme of the night Saturday night in Frederick as the Keys rolled to a 12-6 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
Unlike Friday night, it was the Pelicans who struck first at Harry Grove Stadium on Saturday. Cole Miles led the first inning off with a base hit, and was able to score from third with two men out on a wild pitch during Cody Johnson's at bat.
Pelicans' starter David Francis retired the Keys in order in the bottom of the inning, but that was the final time a Pelicans pitcher would accomplish that feat during the game. Frederick tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second when Robbie Widlansky scored from second on a base hit by Jason White.
Myrtle Beach came back with a five-run third inning to go up 6-1. The inning started with a walk to C.J. Lee followed by five straight hits. The first five that reached in the inning all ended up scoring five separate plays. Michael Fisher, Donell Linares and Johnson all delivered RBI hits in the inning.
The Keys answered the rally with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Matt Angle and Brandon Waring both scored on a single from Caleb Joseph before a two-run double from Tyler Henson cut the Pelicans' lead to 6-5.
After the Keys tied the game in the fifth, they added another four-run frame in the sixth to go up for good. Waring doubled home Ryan Adams to put the Keys up 7-6 before the floodgates opened. Two batters later, Waring scored on a double from Joseph who scored just ahead of Henson on a two-run single from David Cash. The Keys went on to post another single tally in the seventh to close out the scoring at 12-6.
Francis didn't record a decision after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits over three and one-thirds innings. Mikey Mehlich was handed the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in two relief innings. Zach Britton picked up the win despite allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits over five and two-thirds innings.
The two teams wrap up the series Sunday evening at Harry Gove Stadium at 6:00. Lefty Cole Rohrbough is expected to start for the Pelicans against right hander Pedro Beato.
