Potomac Nationals News Release
POTOMAC NATIONALS (9-6, 46-36) VS. KINSTON INDIANS (6-9, 33-50)
LHP Will Atwood (4-6, 4.89) vs. RHP Jonathan Holt (1-3, 4.47)
July 11, 2009 -- 7:00 p.m. Grainger Stadium - Kinston, North Carolina Game #83/Road #47
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals look to snap their two-game losing streak by playing game two with the Kinston Indians from Historic Grainger Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Prior to last night, the P-Nats hadn't lost back-to-back road games since April 25-26 in Frederick but they still own a league-best 29-17 record on the road in 2009. Kinston, meanwhile, is just 16-29 this year from their 60-year-old ballpark and last night's win was just their fifth home victory since May 9th. A win in either one of these next two games will give the K-Tribe their first home series since May 8-10 against Myrtle Beach.
This is the first meeting between these two clubs since May 27th when the Indians swept a rain-shortened two-game series with the Nationals from Pfitzner Stadium. Potomac won three one-run contests against Kinston from May 18th-21st but are winless against the K-Tribe in their last four meetings. Each teams' pitching staff has been spectacular with the Indians (2.03 ERA) staff holding a slight lead over the Nationals (2.83 ERA) in terms of team ERA. Of the seven previous meetings between these clubs, five have been decided by one run.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Jonathan Holt, 23, was drafted in the 5th round by the Cleveland Indians in the 2007 June First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Tampa. The right-hander has made a living on throwing strikes with great regularity as evidence by the fact that he led the Low-A South Atlantic league in fewest walks/9.0 IP during the 2008 season with Lake County. The native of Leesburg, Florida walked just seven batters while striking out 68 in 76.0 IP last season with the Captains and overcame a slow start (0-2, 7.94 ERA) by going 4-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 41 appearances. In college, he was named the Most Outstanding Player for the 2007 NCAA Division II Baseball Championships after pitching a complete game for Tampa to help the Spartans clinch their second consecutive NCAA title.
Holt has been a reliever for much of his career with the Indians but has made three spot starts for Kinston this year going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA as a starter for the K-Tribe.
