July 11, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
After being blown out by seven runs on Friday evening, the Frederick bats came alive on Saturday night. The Keys scored 12 runs on 12 hits, as they double-up'd the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 12-6.
LHP Zach Britton got the start for Frederick, and found himself in early trouble. LF Cole Miles and 2B Michael Fisher hit back-to-back singles. A groundball double play advanced Miles to third. He eventually scored on a wild pitch, giving the Pelicans a 1-0 lead.
Frederick tied it up in the bottom of the second. RF Robbie Widlansky hit a line drive double down the left field line. He eventually scored on 2B Jason White's single to right.
In the top of the third, the Pelicans seemed to have broken away. The first six hitters in the inning reached base, leading to five Myrtle Beach runs on five hits.
Trailing 6-1 headed into the bottom of the third, the Keys answered back. Frederick loaded the bases with one out for C Caleb Joseph. He came through with a two-run single. The very next batter, 3B Tyler Henson, knocked in two with a double to left, pulling the Keys to within one.
Frederick tied it up in the fourth. With one on and one out, 1B Brandon Waring doubled to left-center, knocking in the tying run.
The Keys took the lead for good in the fifth. With Henson on third and nobody out, SS Pedro Florimon hit a sac fly to the wall in left, giving Frederick a 7-6 lead.
In the sixth, ten Keys came to the plate. They scored four times on just three hits to break the game wide open. Frederick tacked on another insurance run in the seventh.
Several Keys batters had big days. Waring finished 3-5 with three doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI. Henson went 2-3 with two RBI. Joseph went 3-5 with four runs batted in, and two runs scored.
Britton got the win. The southpaw battled through 5.2 innings to improve to 5-3. RHP Michael Mehlich took the loss. He drops to 1-5.
The Keys and the Pelicans will meet in the rubber game of this three-game series Sunday evening at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is at 6:00 PM. Gates will open at 3:30 PM for Faith Night. RHP Pedro Beato will get the start for the Keys. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
