Rocks Fall In Series Opener

Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Salem, VA - A slim advantage disappeared quickly as the Blue Rocks (44-39, 6-8) dropped their series opener with the Salem Red Sox on Friday night, 4-3. Salem's Che-Hsuan Lin drove in two runs, including the game-winner. Wilmington's Mike Moustakas had a two-hit night, including a double and two RBIs. The loss dropped Wilmington to 2-2 on its six-game road trip.

Two-out hitting and a pitcher's mistake gave Wilmington a 1-0 lead in the second against Kyle Weiland. Paulo Orlando doubled down the third-base line and took second on a Jamar Walton infield hit. While Ryan Eigsti batted thereafter, Weiland fired a wild pitch that allowed Orlando to cross standing.

Wilmington starter Eduardo Paulino faced one over the minimum and struck out four over the first three innings. Then came the fourth and back-to-back extra-base hits that took away the Blue Rocks' only lead of the night. Daniel Nava, who was activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, doubled on the first pitch of the frame and Mike Jones followed with a rising, line-drive homer off the scoreboard in right-center to make it 2-1 Red Sox.

Paulino retired the next three in a row to end the inning, but was tagged with another score in the fifth when Lin delivered a sac fly for a 3-1 margin. The Blue Crew wasted little time in evening the game, getting the first two batters on and in the next half frame. Derrick Robinson singled to right, stole second and Johnny Giavotella joined him with his second walk of the night and team-leading 50th of the year. Robinson stole third and Moustakas bombed a double to the right-center gap to equalize the game, 3-3. Weiland, however, rebounded and struck out the next three batters in a row to strand Moustakas at second.

Paulino (3-5) departed in the seventh with a man on and one out. Southpaw Kelvin Villa entered and struck out the first man he faced, former Blue Rock Zach Borowiak (2005), but gave up back-to-back hits thereafter, including a run-scoring single by Lin for the game's decisive tally.

The Blue Rocks threatened in the eighth and ninth. Giavotella and Moustakas hit consecutive one-out singles in the eighth. Clint Robinson followed with a 4-6-3 double play. In the ninth, Orlando singled against All-Star closer Derrick Loop, took second on a Walton groundout and went to third on a wild pitch. Eigsti battled from an 0-2 count to work it full, but went down looking for strike three on a questionable call to end the game. Loop secured his 12th save and middle man Ryne Miller (8-2) picked up the win in relief with two scoreless innings. Paulino allowed four scores on six hits in 6.1 innings. He struck out six and walked none.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday night. Wilmington southpaw Rowdy Hardy (2-1, 1.76) will oppose right-hander Eammon Portice (6-3, 4.27).
