Indianapolis Indians News Release
MOOSIC, Pa. -- Three pitchers combined for 7.2 no-hit innings and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre held off a fierce ninth-inning rally to post a 5-3 victory over Indianapolis on a rainy Friday evening at Lackawanna County Stadium.
Scranton/W-B LHP Jim Crowell (5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO), a Valparaiso native, former University of Indianapolis star and former Indians hurler, improved to 1-1 with the win.
Red Barons RHP Dan Giese (2.0 IP, 3 SO) and RHP Ryan Cameron (0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) continued to hold the visitors hitless, while RHP Brian Sanches (0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) and RHP Travis Minix (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) got through the eighth and ninth frames to close out the game. Minix, a former Ball State University star, notched his second save of the campaign.
The contest was delayed one hour and 11 minutes at the end of five frames and another 52 minutes in the middle of the eighth.
The Red Barons, who improve to 28-20 with the four-game split, move into a tie -- with Rochester -- for first place in the International League's North Division. The Indians, who now hold a three-game advantage over Toledo in the IL West, fall to 26-21.
Indianapolis RHP Ron Chiavacci (3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO), who grew up in Scranton, fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Scranton/W-B cracked the scoreboard with a run in the third. 2B Joe Thurston singled to left center and eventually came around to score on RF Josh Kroeger's double down the right-field line.
The Red Barons tacked on two runs in the fourth. 1B Angel Chavez doubled and scored on a three-base error. C Dusty Wathan, who reached on the miscue, then came plateward on Thurston's bunt single. The unearned runs were the first allowed by Indianapolis since May 2.
Scranton/W-B added much-needed insurance runs in the fifth and eighth as Indianapolis stormed back with one in the eighth and two more in the ninth. The Indians put the tying run at second and go-ahead run at first with one out in the ninth, but Minix was able to retire CF Rajai Davis and 2B Taber Lee as the home team held on.
Lee broke up the no-hitter, smashing an RBI single in the eighth after Scranton/W-B had loaded the bases with three bases on balls.
Thurston finished 4-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Red Barons LF Bobby Scales collected three base knocks on the night, while Chavez recorded two.
Indianapolis opens a four-game series at Syracuse Saturday night at 7 p.m. RHP Jason Roach is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Jamie Vermilyea is expected to get the nod for the SkyChiefs.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Saturday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
