Durham Bulls News Release
Durham NC - Kevin Cash hit his first home run of the season in dramatic fashion, crushing a grand slam over the wall in left field to break a sixth-inning 2-2 tie en route to a 9-3 victory over the Richmond Braves Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
After Shawn Riggans led off the sixth inning with a double through the hole, Sean Burroughs reached first base on a bunt single, and Luis Rivas walked to load the bases. Cash brought them all home to give the Bulls a 6-2 lead and send RHP Brian O'Connor to the showers.
Cash was hitting .192 with no home runs before the Bulls began their homestand on Tuesday. In his three appearances this homestand, he has gone 5-11 with five RBI while raising his average to .217. For the game he was 2-3 with a grand slam, one run, four RBI and a walk.
Rain delayed the game for 43 minutes in the bottom of the 2nd inning, and for 37 more minutes in the top of the third, costing the Bulls RHP Edwin Jackson and Rocco Baldelli, who was playing in his third game with Durham as part of a 20-day rehab stint. Baldelli was pulled as a precaution due to the wet field.
The Bulls still managed to pound out 15 hits, one short of Thursday night's 16. Darnell McDonald went 3-4 with a run, B.J. Upton went 2-2 with a run, three walks, and his International League-leading 20th stolen base of the season. Kevin Witt also had a fine series, and after going 3-5 with a double and 3 RBI, has hit 9-16 so far this homestand, with four doubles, a home run, and six RBI. Shawn Riggans went 3-4 with two runs, and Sean Burroughs went 2-3 with a run and two RBI.
Durham put together a team pitching performance, with no pitchers going as long as three innings. After Jackson, who went two innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts, was knocked out by the rain delays, RHP Jose Rodriguez went two and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. LHP Jon Switzer (3-0) picked up the win, going two and a third innings of shutout ball on three hits, one walk and three strikeouts. RHP Jeff Ridgway pitched the last two innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk, with two strikeouts. LHP Brian O'Connor (3-4) took the loss for the Braves, after allowing seven runs on 13 hits and three walks, and striking out one.
Durham opens a four game series with Ottawa on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. as RHP Jamie Shields takes on RHP John Stephens at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Tickets are available at the Durham Bulls Box office, by phone at (919) 956-BULL or online at www.durhambulls.com.
