The Generals Come Away With A 3-2 Victory In Sarnia
November 15, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
Oshawa took on the Sarnia Sting tonight for the second time this season. After a slower start for the Generals, they took the lead in the third and came out with the 3-2 win over Sarnia. The Generals continue to lead the Eastern Conference with 31 points in 18 games. Tonight, the Sting opened the night by honouring their 50-goal scorers with a pre game banner rising. Jon Sim, a 2-time 50 goal scorer, attended and took the ice for the presentation.
Kenny Appleby started in net for Oshawa and Taylor Dupuis stood between the pipes for Sarnia. The first minute of play looked promising with a good chance by Josh Sterk early into the period. However, the first few minutes of the game were quiet for both teams with only two shots from Oshawa just over six minutes in. Things picked up when Stephen Desrocher and Josh Chapman dropped the gloves at 7:05 after Desrocher reacted to a hit on Huether from Chapman. Both players received five minutes for fighting. Under a minute after the fight, Sarnia got on the board first with an unassisted goal by Nikita Korostelev, who also leads the Sting in scoring. Just after Sarnia's goal, Chapman and Hunter Smith raced to the boards and Chapman fell awkwardly, which resulted in a holding penalty on Smith. The Generals fought off the penalty and put a few more shots on Dupuis but were unable to find the net in the first period. Oshawa ended the first trailing by one but leading shots on goal 10-3.
The second period offered some scoring chances for Oshawa but was another quiet start to the period from both teams. Earlier in the second, Appleby made a huge save with a shot by Troy Lajeunesse, but at 8:54 into the second, Lajeunesse slid the puck past Appleby with help from Patrick White and Kevin Spinozzi to give the Sting a two goal lead. With some more chances on net, the Generals got on the scoreboard with a goal from Cole Cassels about 13 minutes into the period. Hunter Smith picked up his tenth assist on Cassel's eighth goal of the season. With just over three minutes left in the period, Oshawa got the second power play of the game after Jeff King went to the box for two minutes for delay of game. Despite holding their spot with the second best power play in the league, Oshawa was unable to produce a goal. The second period wrapped up with Sarnia leading 2-1, but the Generals dominated with shots on net at 26-9.
The Generals bounced back in the third period, as they have many times this season. Oshawa fought off Desrocher's delay of game penalty and took their turn on the power play eight minutes into the period. Cassels took advantage of the power play and scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Dal Colle and Lindberg. With the game tied up, the Generals kept their energy and managed to score another within a minute and a half with a goal by Desrocher, assisted by Anthony Cirelli and Aidan Wallace. With a 3-2 lead, the Generals got a chance on another power play but were unable to add another goal. Sarnia was given one more chance to tie it up with a late tripping penalty on Petschenig. It was six on four for the final moments of the game but the Generals stood strong and walked away with the 3-2 win.
It was a well-deserved win for Oshawa who outshot Sarnia 39-14. Cassels, Vande Sompel, Dal Colle and Appleby were all back tonight after representing Team OHL in the Subway Super Series on Thursday night. They will be back to play game four against Russia in Kingston on Monday, Nov. 17. Head to Kingston for the game, watch it live on Rogers Sportsnet, or listen live on Sportsnet Radio.
