CHARLESTON, SC -- The Charleston RiverDogs have announced that The Citadel will be the 2008 recipient of the T. Ashton Phillips Award for service to others.

The presentation will be made prior to the New York Yankees affiliate's final game of the season on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The ceremony will be held prior to the first pitch against the Savannah Sand Gnats, which is slated for 7:05 p.m.

The club presents the citation annually in memory of one of their co-owners, T. Ashton Phillips. Phillips, who passed away in 2006, was a successful businessman and philanthropist who believed strongly in giving back to the local community. Phillips' generosity can be felt across the Lowcountry at many levels from youth sports to college to the professional ranks.

In 2007 the club presented the award to Charleston Fire Chief Rusty Thomas, who accepted the award on behalf of the entire Charleston Fire Department. The department had recently lost nine brave firefighters during a West Ashley blaze on June 18, 2007.

The inaugural recipient of the award was the Phillips Family.

Expected to attend on behalf of The Citadel are Director of Athletics Larry Leckonby, Baseball Coach Fred Jordan, and former AD Les Robinson, among others.

The RiverDogs and The Citadel both share the use of Riley Park as their home field, and have collaborated on many joint efforts, including the annual Hot Stove Banquet in January.
