Captains Rally to Beat BlueClaws 6-5

(Eastlake, OH) - The Captains rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning scoring two runs to defeat the Lakewood BlueClaws 6-5 for the second night in a row. With two outs, Dustin Realini singled and then a throwing error by shortstop Freddy Galvis allowed Mark Thompson to score the winning run. The BlueClaws are now 2.5 games behind West Virginia who shut out Lexington 6-0 on Saturday night.

Captains starter Joey Mahalic gave up one run in the first, two runs in the fourth, and one run in the fifth before Gary Campfield was summoned from the bullpen with no outs in the inning and Matt Rizzotti on second base.

The Captains started their scoring in the bottom of the third when Karexon Sanchez hit his 11th home run of the season to center field off of BlueClaws starter Michael Stutes. The Captains got to Stutes in the bottom of 5th inning when Adam White singled on a ground ball to shortstop Freddy Galvis. Then, Mark Thompson singled to center field and White advanced to 2nd. With Matt McBride batting, the Captains pulled off a double-steal. Adam White stole 3rd base and Mark Thompson stole 2nd. Stutes walked Matt McBride to load the bases, and then White scored when Dustin Realini was walked. Matt Brown singled to left field which scored Mark Thompson and Matt McBride. The Captains ended the fifth inning tied 4-4 with the BlueClaws.

Mahalic took a no decision going 4.0 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out four. Campfield came on and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and struck out two while only allowing one hit. Paolo Espino got the win by pitching the final 2.1 innings. Espino is now 2-0 with a 3.73 ERA. BlueClaws starter Michael Stutes went 4.2 innings, allowed four runs on five hits, walked four and struck out six and got a no-decision. Chris Kissock took the loss and his record fell to 4-6.

The Captains and BlueClaws play the final game of the five game series on Sunday with the Captains sending RHP Joanniel Montero (3-6, 5.58) to the mound to face the BlueClaws. Game time is 1:05 PM. All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

Sunday at 1:05 PM is the final Plevin & Gallucci Family Fun Day where fans can meet Captains players prior to the game and get autographs and kids can run the bases after the game presented by Andrews Osborne Academy. Also the first 1,500 fans will receive a Captains Fleece Blankets Presented by Lake Hospital System.

Tickets for all Captains home games including the 2008 SAL Playoffs are on sale at the Classic Park box office, by phone at 440-954-WINS (9467) or at captainsbaseball.com. Tickets for the Playoffs remain the same as regular season game tickets, $9 reserved seat, $7 bleachers, juniors, and seniors, $6 lawn. Lawn seats for the Playoffs will only be sold once the reserved seats and bleachers are sold out. The $7 group rate will still apply to groups of 20 or more.
