Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Hagerstown, MD- The Suns used some timely hitting in a four-run fifth inning that propelled Hagerstown to a 4-2 victory in the rubber match of this week's five game series at Municipal Stadium. After Shorebird starter Zach Britton retired the first 12 batters he faced over four dominant innings, the Suns broke up the perfecto when Sean Rooney led off the fifth inning with a double in the gap.

That was followed up with a pair of walks that loaded the bases and opened the floodgates. The Suns next four batters, Jake Rogers, Garrett Bass, Mark Gildea, and Valerio Heredia, all singled to score one run with each base hit. When all was said and done, the Suns had a four run inning that provided just enough offense for the triumph. Hagerstown starter Cole Kimball walked the leadoff man in the top of the first inning, then allowed a pair of singles before retiring the next nine men he faced over three innings. Matt Angle was able to come across in the first to give Delmarva the 1-0 lead, but Delmarva's offense was quieted for the rest of Kimball's outing, which lasted five innings and included seven strikeouts.

After Britton departed after six innings, the Shorebirds, for the first time in two years, were graced by rehabbing major leaguers out of the bullpen. Both Chris Ray and Greg Aquino contributed scoreless innings in relief for Delmarva, keeping the Birds within striking distance for a possible late-inning rally. Ray allowed one hit and struck out a pair in his third rehab appearance (the other two were with Frederick and Aberdeen) since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. Aquino used just two pitches to induce a pair of fly ball outs for the first two men he faced in the eighth. Then, he struck out Sean Rooney swinging to retire the side.

Delmarva scored a run in the top of the eighth on Tyler Henson's RBI double that cut the deficit to two, but the Shorebirds went in order against Hagerstown's Chris Lugo in the ninth as the Suns won for the second straight night. After losing two of the first three games, Hagerstown responded to take the five game series 3-2. Sunday afternoon also concluded the 23-game season series between Hagerstown and Delmarva, with the Birds taking the majority of the meetings, 13-10.
