Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD -The Hagerstown Suns (24-38) topped the Delmarva Shorebirds (34-27) by a score of 4-2 on Sunday, August 24th, giving the Suns their third win of the five game series.
Delmarva scored first on Sunday, as the first three batters reached base against Suns starter Cole Kimball (6-9). Centerfielder Matt Angle walked against Kimball and after a wild pitch and a balk moved him to third base, scored on a single by second baseman Ryan Adams. Tyler Henson then singled for Delmarva, but Kimball settled down after that, retiring the next nine batters he faced.
The score stayed 1-0 through four and half innings, but in the bottom of the fifth, the Suns finally got to Delmarva starter Zach Britton (10-7). Britton had retired the Suns in order through the first four innings before allowing a lead-off double to Sean Rooney to start the bottom of the fifth. Consecutive walks to Robby Jacobsen and Blake Stouffer loaded the bases in the fifth, and the Suns then proceeded to rattle off four consecutive RBI singles to take a 4-1 lead.
Jake Rogers, Garrett Bass, Mark Gildea and Valerio Heredia all came to the plate with the bases loaded in the fifth and each of them drove in one run with a single, giving the Suns a 4-1 lead.
Ryan Harrison relieved Kimball after the fifth inning and did not allow a run in his two innings of work before turning the ball over to right hander Chris Lugo in the eighth inning. Lugo earned his second save of the season as he allowed just one run on one hit and a walk in two innings of work.
Two members of the Baltimore Orioles, the parent club of the Shorebirds, made rehab appearances in the game. Relievers Chris Ray and Greg Aquino both pitched one inning and did not allow any runs. Ray did allow a single to Valerio Heredia, but struck out two batters in the seventh inning while Aquino retired all three batters he faced in the eighth.
Kimball picked up the win for Hagerstown, going five innings and allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Britton took the loss for the Shorebirds, as he allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight batters.
The Suns will now travel to Lake County for a three-game series with the Captains starting on Monday, August 25th.
