San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - Grady Moore scored his first goal of the year, helping the San Diego Gulls remain unbeaten against the Bakersfield Condors, 6-3 on Friday night before nearly 5,000 at the ipayOne Center.
Moore's power-play score at the 14:25 mark of the second period turned out to be the game-winner for San Diego (16-14-4), which improved to a perfect 5-0-0 against the Condors (13-12-4) this season. Despite the win, the Gulls still remain in third place in the Pacific Division after Long Beach won Friday night to keep its tight, two-point lead over San Diego. Bakersfield, meanwhile, dropped to six points back of the Gulls in fourth place.
Steve Hildenbrand and Pierre-Luc Sleigher added a score and two assists apiece for the home team, which got a multi-point night from four players. All-Star Jesse Bennefield also contributed a goal and an assist, while Mark Wires notched a pair of helpers in only his second game for San Diego. The Gulls acquired the forward Monday in a trade with Phoenix for defenseman Chet Ferreira.
In its past three games against the Condors, San Diego has outscored them 21-4. In this one, Bakersfield struck first, just 95 seconds into the match off a delayed penalty. But the Gulls came back to take leads of 2-1 and 3-2 en route to snapping their two-match losing streak.
With 1:43 left in the second period, Bakersfield head coach Marty Raymond was ejected from the game and awarded a game misconduct for arguing with the officials. The ejection came immediately following a Condors goal that pulled them within 4-3.
That's how the game entered the final frame, when San Diego shut out Bakersfield while adding a pair of goals for some insurance, including an empty-netter by Sleigher to cap the win with 55 seconds remaining.
Tom Lawson stopped 32 shots to up his record to 4-0-0 against the Condors, who will face San Diego three more times this year.
Notes: The Gulls are 5-0-0 against the Condors this season, outscoring them 24-8 (15-1 in the last two meetings)... Hildenbrand has a four-game point streak and has 31 points (12g, 19a) in the last 24 games... Bennefield has 26 points (13g, 13a) in his last 16 games... Defenseman Doug MacIver was activated from the injured list after missing the last 22 games with a knee sprain... However, five others remain on the IR: Alex Kim (broken collarbone), Alex Rogosheske (torn ACL), David Svagrovsky (tear in finger), Guillaume Fournier (concussion) and Andy Thompson (wrist surgery)...
