Texas League All-Star Ball & Flag Tour in May and June
May 18, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Whataburger and the Texas League, along with the Corpus Christi Hooks and Lone Star Overnight, have teamed up to present the Texas League Commemorative Ball & Flag Tour, May 19-June 26.
The journey begins at 6:30 Saturday evening at Whataburger Field before the Hooks tangle with Midland. Corpus Christi mascots Rusty Hook and Sammy Seagull join Whataguy and Texas League president Tom Kayser for the ceremonial first pitch. The commemorative ball and flag then begin their 38-day, 15-stop, 2,500-mile trip.
Whataburger restaurants in current and former Texas League markets are hosting special events along the way. The ball, bearing signatures of city leaders and former players at the 15 tour stops, will be used for the ceremonial first pitch before the 71st Texas League All-Star Game at Whataburger Field on Tuesday, June 26. The flag will fly above the center field batters' eye that night after having flown over each restaurant along the way.

"Since the 1950s, when Harmon Dobson served burgers and fries to little league teams after games, to Whataburger Field, America's pastime has always helped Whataburger show gratitude to the communities that support us," said Todd Coerver, Vice President of Brand Management for Whataburger Restaurants, LP. "Partnering with the Texas League and Lone Star Overnight gives us the opportunity to bring a piece of baseball history to our communities, large and small."
Kayser, who's authored books on league history, appreciates the value of the tour and what it means to fans young and old.
"The Texas League has a long and amazing history," Kayser said. "This tour is a unique combination of cities that have been a part of that history or are currently making history in the Texas League. This is an opportunity to keep the spirit of Texas League baseball alive in cities both big and small."
Added Hooks president J.J. Gottsch: "Whataburger and the Texas League are steeped in tradition. Whataburger is a great family company and a great partner of the Hooks. The All-Star Game gives us an opportunity to celebrate the institution that is the Texas League, past and present. This tour is a way for current league markets and former member towns to be recognized for their contributions to baseball."
