Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After scoring one run in its last two games, Corpus Christi struck for seven and rode the arm of starter Chance Douglass to victory over Midland Friday night before 7,374 at Whataburger Field.
Douglass (1-2) turned in his longest outing of the season, allowing one run and six hits over eight innings and 108 pitches. He walked one and struck out eight.
Midland shortstop Gregorio Petit blasted a home run onto the berm in left field for the second straight night. His third long ball of the season and second against Corpus Christi put the RockHounds up 1-0 in the first.
The Hooks answered in their half of the frame. With one away, Drew Sutton lined a single into right field. After Todd Self flied out to center, Noochie Varner reached base thanks to a fielding error by second baseman Eddie Cornejo. Ray Sadler then took advantage with a single up the middle to tie the score at one.
Corpus Christi (13-29) moved ahead with three runs in the fourth. Jonny Ash
kick-started the rally with a one-out walk. Following a single by Neil Sellers, J.R. Towles laced a liner to left, scoring Ash. Francisco Caraballo then grounded a single up the middle past a drawn in infield to score Sellers and Towles for a 4-1 advantage.
Midland starter Brandon Webb failed to finish the fifth as the first three Corpus Christi batters reached base. Self led off with a double into right-center and advanced to third base on Varner's single to center field. Sadler then bounced into a fielder's choice, enabling Self to score for a 5-1 Hooks advantage.
Webb (0-1) lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out two. Travis Foley, one of four relievers used by Midland (25-12), was tagged for two runs in the eighth after an RBI double by Self and Varner's run-scoring single.
Brian Gordon pitched a perfect ninth to nail down the victory.
Midland and Corpus Christi play game three of the series Saturday at 7:05. The RockHounds' Mike Madsen (2-0, 1.08) will face lefty Troy Patton (2-3, 2.39).
