Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals outlasted the Tulsa Drillers on Thursday night, picking up an 8-7, 12-inning win at Drillers Stadium in Tulsa.

Joe Mather's RBI single in the top of the 12th was the game-winner, as the Cards won for the third time in four tries on the current road trip and for the second straight game overall.

With two outs in the 12th inning, Springfield put together a rally against Tulsa's Jarrett Grube (3-1) , who had only allowed one run in 24 innings prior to Thursday night. Tyler Greene and Cody Haerther had back-to-back two-out infield singles, bringing Mather to the plate. Robbed of a potential game-winning hit in the tenth, when Jordan Czarniecki made a diving catch in left field, Mather wouldn't be denied again. Mather singled softly to center field, bringing home Tyler Greene with the game-winning run, giving Springfield an 8-7 lead.

Chris Perez, who worked two innings in a save on Wednesday night, came out of the pen again, firing a 1-2-3 12th inning to record his tenth save of the year.

The Cards exploded for five runs in the second inning against Tulsa starter Ching-Lung Lo. Juan Richardson started the scoring with his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot to left-center field. The frame was capped with Tyler Greene's three-run double, giving the Cards a 5-0 lead.

Tulsa responded with three in the fourth inning against Cards' starter Eric Haberer, as Matt Miller highlighted the inning with a two-run single, making it 5-3.

Tulsa catcher Rick Guarno hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, giving the Drillers a 7-5 lead. Haberer loaded the bases with only one out, then was removed in favor of reliever Matt Scherer. Scherer's second pitch to Guarno was crushed to left field, for Guarno's second homer of the year.

Springfield tied it by getting a pair of runs in the seventh. A Bryan Anderson RBI single plated Cody Haerther, making it 7-6. Joe Mather scored from third on a Juan Lucena sacrifice fly, tying the game at 7-7.

In addition to the game-tying sacrifice fly, Lucena also had five singles, becoming the first Springfield Cardinals' player in franchise history with a five-hit game.

Jose Garcia (2-2) got the win in relief, retiring the only man he faced in the 11th inning.

Springfield improves to 17-20 with the win, now 3 ½ games behind Tulsa in the North Division. The Cards continue their road trip on Friday, sending Mitchell Boggs (2-3) to the mound against Tulsa's Samuel Deduno (0-1). Game time from Drillers Stadium on Friday night is 7:05pm.
