Boggs Beats Drillers
May 18, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
It was difficult to determine whether Springfield pitcher Mitchell Boggs had a bigger role with his bat or his arm during Friday's game with the Tulsa Drillers. Boggs used his arm to limit the Drillers to only two hits in seven innings, while he used his bat to collect two hits, including a homer as he led the Cardinals to a 5-1 victory over the Drillers. Springfield has now won the first two games of a four-game series at Drillers Stadium.
Springfield had jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a two-run single by Cody Haerther in the top of the first inning. Boggs then added to the lead with a two-run homer to left in the second inning. Mike Ferris led off the inning by doubling over the head of right fielder Joe Gaetti. Two batters later, Boggs smashed his first career home run to give Springfield a 4-0 lead.
Boggs gave himself more run support in the fourth with an RBI single. Juan Richardson led off the inning by getting hit with a pitch. He advanced to second on a Ferris groundout, and two batters later, Boggs ripped a single to center to plate Richardson and give the Cardinals a 5-1 lead.
The win for Boggs evened his record at 3-3. The right-hander allowed only the two hits in seven innings of work. He did walk five hitters and hit two more while striking out four.
Drillers starting pitcher Samuel Deduno (0-2) suffered the loss going five and one thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks and hitting two batters. He struck out six Cardinals including striking out the side in the third inning with Rasmus, Mather and Haerther all going down.
Gaetti plated Tulsa's only run with a sacrifice fly in the third. Corey Wimberly led off the inning by walking and advancing to second on a wild pitch with Jonathan Herrera batting. Wimberly went to third when Herrera struck out on a pitch in the dirt that got away from catcher Henry Guerrero. Then, Gaetti's fly to center was deep enough to plate Wimberly and make the score 4-1.
Springfield reliever Nick Webber finished the game with a pair of scoreless innings.
The Drillers and Cardinals will meet again Saturday night when Tulsa's Matt Daley (1-1, 3.13) faces off against Springfield's Cory Rauschenberger (3-2, 7.62) at Drillers Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7:05PM.
