Winston-Salem Dash News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (JUNE 7, 2011) - Jose Martinez hit a three-run home run in the tenth inning to snap a tie game and the Dash beat the Pelicans 6-2 in extra innings at BB&T Coastal Field on Tuesday night. Myrtle Beach sent the game to extras by scoring with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Winston-Salem recovered to brush back the birds for the team's third straight victory and seventh in the last nine games.

With the Dash (28-30) leading 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning and J.R. Ballinger pitching in relief, Jared Prince singled home Ryan Strausborger to level the ballgame.

In the tenth, Daniel Wagner singled against Ryan Kelly and Jared Mitchell was intentionally walked to bring up Martinez. On an 0-1 pitch, Martinez blasted his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field to give Winston back the lead. Nick Ciolli added some insurance later in the inning with an RBI single to score Andy Wilkins.

The blown save by Ballinger cost Terry Doyle another chance for his second win of the season. Doyle, who threw nine innings without allowing an earned run in his previous outing, also a no-decision, gave up just one run in eight innings on Tuesday. The Pelicans trailed 2-0 entering the eighth and got their first run on Leury Garcia's two-out RBI single to left.

Doyle out-pitched Myrtle starter Joe Wieland, who entered the game third in the Carolina League in ERA and first in strikeouts. Wieland gave up solo home runs to Jake Oester and Mitchell for his only major mistakes of the night. He lasted seven innings and did not factor into the decision.

Ballinger (3-0) got his third win in as many outings as a member of the Dash while Kelly (2-3) was saddled with the loss.

The win cut the Dash's deficit in the Southern Division to five games with 12 to play before the end of the first half. They can cut it to three games with a sweep of first-place Myrtle Beach.

The Dash have four such victories in their last eight games... Wieland's streak of 227 straight batters without a walk ended in the seventh inning when he walked Oester.
