Pelicans Game Notes

June 7, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP Joe Wieland (5-3, 2.08) at RHP Terry Doyle (1-5, 3.05)

HUGE LOSS: Pelicans star third baseman Mike Olt was taken out of last night's game after an eighth-inning home plate collision with Jason Bour as he tried to score the go-ahead run. The news got worse after the game as Olt was diagnosed with a broken collarbone, sending the irreplaceable cleanup hitter to the disabled list. Entering 2011 as Baseball America's seventh-ranked Texas prospect, Olt had been enjoying his first full season in the pros. He leads the Carolina League in on base percentage (.395) and is tied for the lead in walks with 35. His .286 batting average is eighth-best and he's third in the circuit with ten home runs.

SCOREBOARD WATCHING: As the Pelicans lost last night, Kinston rocked Wilmington 11-1 to shrink the Myrtle Beach lead in the Southern Division to three and a half games. The Birds have 13 games left on their first-half schedule while the Indians have 14. The two clubs will square off in Kinston this weekend for a three-game series.

SEEING DOUBLE: Ryan Strausborger has carried his big weekend in Lynchburg into the homestand. The three hitter in the lineup has notched two hits in his last four games, going 8-for-18 (.444) during that stretch. The Osceola, IN native leads the Pelicans with 18 multiple-hit games this season.

GETTING ABOARD: Ryan Strausborger has an even longer stretch in reaching base, running his streak to 18 consecutive games, starting on May 19 in Winston-Salem. He is batting .324 with a .373 on base percentage during the run that is the fourth-longest on-base streak in the Carolina League this season. If he reaches tonight, Ryan will tie Jared Prince's 2011 team high of 19, which Jared strung together April 28-May 19.
