Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League announced on Monday that Wilmington Blue Rocks right-hander Elisaul Pimentel has been named the C.L. Pitcher of the Week for the period ranging from May 30 - June 5. It marks the first time a Wilmington pitcher has been honored by the league office in 2011. Infielder John Whittleman earned Player of the Week honors on May 16.
Pimentel was robbed of a win on Saturday against Potomac despite turning in the best start of the season by a Blue Rock hurler. He surrendered just one baserunner over the first seven innings and allowed only one man to reach scoring position throughout his career-long eight-inning outing. The P-Nats managed just one hit and nary a run against him, but Pimentel left a scoreless game, and his bullpen yielded three runs in the ninth.
On the season, Pimentel is 3-3 with a 4.58 earned run average. The Dominican native has allowed three runs or fewer in seven of his 10 starts and has fanned 35 while walking only 15 in 55 innings pitched. He entered the season as the 29th-ranked prospect in the best minor league system in baseball according to Baseball America.
Pimentel was acquired by the Royals, along with catcher Lucas May, in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers for outfielder Scott Podsednik on July 28, 2010. The key to his success in 2011 has been pitching to contact in the pitcher-friendly confines of Frawley Stadium. Pimentel has a scant 2.59 ERA and a .190 batting average against in five starts at home. Conversely hitters are batting .284 against him and he has posted a 7.23 ERA in five road starts.
He will look to further strengthen those numbers at Frawley Stadium when he takes the hill next on Thursday against the Kinston Indians at 7:05 p.m. His teammates hope to end a five-game skid when they host the K-Tribe tonight. The newly-formed piggyback duo of Jake Odorizzi (4-0, 2.05) and Michael Mariot (5-0, 2.36) hit the hill for Wilmington against Kinston right-hander Brett Bach (4-3, 3.08). Broadcast coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. when studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
It is a Tworrific Tuesday at Frawley Stadium, which means fans can get two box seats, two hot dogs, two sodas and two baseballs for only $26. For tickets call 302-888-BLUE or visit bluerocks.com.
