Tennessee Holds off Carolina

Zebulon, NC --- Tennessee built a six run lead against Carolina before holding off the Mudcats 8-7 in 10 innings in front of 3,912 fans Monday afternoon at Five County Stadium.

Tennessee (13-7) scored three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run over the left field wall by Jake Fox. Tennessee scored three more runs in the fifth inning to give them a 7-1 lead over Carolina (10-10). Former N.C. State standout Matt Camp hit an RBI triple to right center field, and later scored a run for the Smokies.

Carolina rallied back with four runs in the seventh inning and two in the eighth. Brett Hayes hit a solo home run in the seventh to cut into lead and Grant Psomas hit a two-run shut to left to tie the game after eight innings. However, with a chance to win the game in the ninth, Andy Jenkins fanned with the bases loaded and one out before Casey Lambert escaped the inning.

In the top of the 10th inning, Tyler Colvin hit an RBI double to score Camp and give Tennessee an 8-7 lead. Chris Mobley (L,3-2) surrendered two hits in the tenth and was tagged with the loss.

Carolina was unable to score in the bottom half of the tenth inning against Jose Ceda (s,5) oif Tennessee.

Carolina will play the first of a five game series in Birmingham beginning Tuesday night at 8:05 ET. Gaby Hernandez will make his first start of the season for the Mudcats.
