Montgomery Biscuits News Release

JACKSON, Tenn. - Tennessee native David Price, pitching in his home state Sunday for the first time since he became baseball's no. 1 draft pick last year, threw seven innings to help the Montgomery Biscuits (8-11; 42-47) to a 3-1 win over the homestanding West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (6-12; 47-42).

Price (3-0) retired 17 Diamond Jaxx hitters down at one point, sticking around for the exact amount of time required to earn his third Double-A, and seventh professional, victory. He allowed four hits and one walk, striking out six, none beyond the fourth inning.

Nonetheless, West Tenn took a first-inning lead on Price after Brent Johnson doubled and Mike Wilson singled him home. Catcher Jose Yepez singled to lead off the ensuing inning, and no other Diamond Jaxx player would reach base again until Yepez doubled with two outs in the seventh.

The Biscuits caught up in the third inning, manufacturing a run on a Johnny Raburn double, Ronnie Merrill sacrifice bunt and Erold Andrus sacrifice fly.

For the totality of six innings, West Tenn starter Brodie Downs was effectively Price's equal. The righty allowed just one run on six hits, walking four and striking out one. He escaped a loss in his final inning, in which the Biscuits loaded the bases with one out but failed to score; a dubious feat that the Biscuits would repeat in the seventh inning against reliever Nelson Payano.

The Biscuits made Price, and indeed themselves, a winner in the eighth inning against reliever Shawn Kelley. J.T. Hall had led off the inning with a single, only to be erased on a double play when Matt Spring attempted to bunt him to second base. But a Raburn single and a Merrill walk re-ignited the inning, and Andrus smashed a comebacker up the middle off of Kelley's spikes. It ricocheted to third baseman Mike Mangini, who picked it up, and, in an ill-fated attempt to throw out Andrus at first, committed a two-base throing error, scoring Raburn and Merrill.

Roger Deago earned his fourth save by pitching two scoreless innings.

The Biscuits go for the four-game sweep Monday night behind righty Jeremy Hellickson. The righty is scheduled to oppose West Tenn lefty Ryan Ketchner.
