
Ten Bucks Drafted in 2014 MLB Draft

Waterloo, Iowa - Six current or former Waterloo Bucks were drafted on the third day of the 2014 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Saturday, bringing the total number of Bucks drafted to 10. Eric Stout, Chesny Young, Gerrion Grim III, Kyle Pollock, Richard Gonzalez, and Brock Hudgens join Day Two draftees Jordan Foley, Taylor Byrd, Reed Reilly, and John Ziznewski as former Bucks to be selected.
The first former Waterloo player selected in the third day of the 2014 MLB Draft was left-handed pitcher Eric Stout. Stout was taken in the 13th round with the 393rd pick by the Kansas City Royals. A product of Butler University, Stout appeared in 10 games for the Bucks in 2013, starting nine. Stout went 2-1 with a 3.97 ERA and 41 strikeouts. This season for the Bulldogs, Stout was 3-7 with one save, 64 strikeouts, and a 6.78 ERA.
With the 409th overall pick (14th round), the Chicago Cubs selected second baseman Chesny Young. A product of Mercer University, Young played for the Bucks in 2013, hitting .325 in 58 games. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Young ended the '13 season leading the league in three categories: runs (62), walks (60), and on-base percentage (.470). Young tied for fourth in the NWL in triples with three and was named to both the mid-season and post-season NWL All-Star Teams. This season for the Bears, Young hit .358 with four home runs, 38 RBI, and three stolen bases.
The third former Buck of the day to be selected in the draft was outfielder Gerrion Grim III who was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 14th round with the 421st overall pick. Grim played with Waterloo in 2013, seeing time as both a hitter and a pitcher. At the plate, Grim hit .209 with five RBI and two stolen bases. As a hurler, Grim finished with a 2-1 record and a 3.79 ERA to go along with 36 strikeouts. A product of Jefferson College, Grim hit .343 with seven home runs and 48 RBI this season for the Vikings.
Kyle Pollock, a catcher from the University of Evansville, was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 20th round. Pollock, selected 603rd overall, played with the Bucks in 2013 and is currently listed as inactive on their 2014 roster. Last year for Waterloo, Pollock hit .263 with five home runs, 33 RBI, and a .404 slugging percentage. This season for the Aces, Pollock hit .310 with 15 doubles, three triples and a team-high five home runs.
The next former Buck to be drafted was catcher Richard Gonzalez. Gonzalez was taken in the 29th round with the 856th pick by the Houston Astros. A product of Alabama State University, Gonzalez played in 12 games for Waterloo in 2012, hitting .279. Gonzales ended the injury-shortened season with five RBI and a .404 on-base percentage. For the Hornets, Gonzalez was a three-time All-SWAC selection, earning first team honors this past season in hitting .270 with a career-high four home runs and 33 RBI.
The final former Buck to be selected was Brock Hudgens, a right-handed pitcher taken by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 926th overall pick (31st round). A product of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Hudgens played for Waterloo in 2012, starting 11 games. Hudgens finished the year with a 4-2 record and 3.16 ERA to go along with 52 strikeouts. This season for the 49ers, the righty led his team with 14 starts, setting a new personal-best, with his three wins and 3.61 earned run average.
