Kenosha Kingfish News Release

After a difficult road trip to Madison and La Crosse, the Kingfish got back into the winner's column Sunday at historic Simmons Field. Squaring off with the Northwoods League's other expansion team, the Kalamazoo Growlers, The Fish pulled out a 4-3 victory.

The Kingfish put numerous runners on base early on, but had difficulty cashing in. This recurring theme was highlighted in the first inning when the team couldn't put any runners across after having the bases loaded with nobody out. Following a jam of their own, the Kingfish found themselves down 1-0 after three. Soon thereafter, a Caleb Howell RBI-Double would knot the score at one through four innings of play.

The sixth inning brought some run support for reliever and eventual winning pitcher Curtis Morgan. With runners on the corners, Growler pitcher Shane Bryant was called for a balk, allowing Spencer Gaa to score. A Pat Porter triple would later plate Chris Godinez and Kyle Brooks, pushing the score to 4-1.

With the score 4-2 entering the ninth, Steven Klimek took the ball for the Fish. After allowing the first two batters to reach, the right-hander was faced with runners on second and third and just one out. Though a third run would come across, he forced the next two batters to groundout to first baseman Steven Sensley, closing out the win for the hungry Kingfish squad.

The most valuable player for the Kingfish on the afternoon was Porter, who reached base in each of his five at-bats while also chipping in 2 crucial RBI. Other notable performances were turned in by Chris Godinez (1-2, 2 BB, 1 R) and winning pitcher Curtis Morgan (W, 4 IP, 4 K, 2 H, 0 ER).

On the Growlers side, Ryan Bull went 3-4 with a run scored. Starter Caleb Baragar mustered just 3.2 innings pitched while walking four Kingfish batters. The team's lack of timely hitting ultimately cost them the game, as they recorded just four hits on the day.

The Kingfish, now 5-8, are tied for second place with the Kalamazoo Growlers in the South Division.Tomorrow, the teams face off again with first pitch slated for 7:05pm.
