Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - The Green Bay Bullfrogs returned to Joannes Stadium on Sunday, looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses to the Madison Mallards on Friday and Saturday. The Lakeshore Chinooks (9-4) came to Green Bay on Sunday for game one of a two-game series with the Bullfrogs. With the help of seven errors by the Chinooks and a strong offensive showing by the Bullfrogs, Green Bay (8-5) took game one of the series by a score of 9-2.
Corey Fischer (Madison College) made his Bullfrogs debut on the mound on Sunday and tossed a gem. The Denmark, Wis. native pitched six innings and gave up just one run on three hits. Fischer faced 21 batters in his six innings, which was just three more than the minimum amount possible. While Fischer was pitching, the Chinooks managed to send more than three batters to the plate in only the fourth inning. Fischer also struck out four batters and picked up the win for Green Bay.
Luke Watson (UW-Stevens Point) and Cody Pollack (Midland) pitched in relief after Fischer and gave up just one run to the Chinooks on three hits.
The Bullfrogs gave Fischer plenty of run support as they had ten hits and scored nine runs, including a five-run fifth inning. The scoring started in the second for Green Bay when their newest player, Michael Mierow (UW-Whitewater) recorded his first hit as a Bullfrog which scored Dennis Colon (Illinois State). Matthew de la Rosa (Lenoir-Rhyne) followed Mierow and knocked home Dane Hutcheon (Montevallo), who reached on an error by the Chinooks shortstop, with an RBI-single. Mierow scored after the Chinooks catcher tried to throw down to third to pick-off Mierow but threw the ball into left field. The Bullfrogs finished the second inning and entered the third inning with a 3-0 advantage.
Green Bay added one more run in the third when Ryan Koziol (Gulf Coast State) reached on an error by the shortstop and ended up at third thanks to two more Chinook errors that kept the inning alive with two outs. Hutcheon then came to the plate and scored Koziol with an RBI-single.
Lakeshore added one of their two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but once again the Bullfrogs added insurance runs with five in the fifth inning. The Bullfrogs started the inning with three straight hits by Dean Long (Emporia State), Koziol, and Colon. Hutcheon and de la Rosa then walked in the inning with the bases loaded to score both Long and Koziol. Colon then scored on a fielder's choice by Matt Beaty (Belmont), Hutcheon scored on a sacrifice fly by Ivan Vieitez (Lenoir-Rhyne), and de la Rosa scored the final run of the inning on an error by Lakeshore's pitcher to put the Bullfrogs ahead by a score of 9-1. Lakeshore would add one run in the seventh but that was as close as they would get.
Both Koziol and Colon finished 2-for-5 on the day with two runs scored each. Hutcheon had a strong day at the plate going 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, and two walks. Eight of the nine starters for the Bullfrogs recorded at least one hit during Sunday's game.
For Lakeshore, Evan Kruczynski took the loss, pitching four innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits.
The Bullfrogs and Chinooks return to action on Monday night for game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm from Joannes Stadium.
