February 18, 2013 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
Team Denise continued their Family Day dominance, knocking off Team Bill to win their fifth straight IceDogs Skill Competition 19-18 in front of approximately 1750 fans at the Gatorade Garden City Complex.
The results of the events were as follows:
Puck Control Relay
Team Bill got the first point of the day as his Puck Control Relay team of Ben Hughes, Mitchell Fitzmorris, Anthony DiFruscia, Jesse Graham and Ryan Shipley defeated Team Denise's team of Mack Lemmon, Brendan Perlini, Ondrej Kopta, Broderick Kelly and Tyler Mort.
Fastest Skater
Team Bill quickly extended the lead, picking up a point for fastest average time (14.66 sec to 15.04 sec) and two points for the fastest skater, Jesse Graham with a time of 13.65 seconds.
Fastest Goalie
Team Denise would get on the board in the fastest goalie race as Brent Moran would top Christopher Festarini to make it 5-1.
Breakaway Challenge
The Breakaway Challenge would see Team Denise cut the deficit to the 5-4, as Mike Robinson would pick up the only perfect score of the afternoon with a shell game helmet trick, while their total of 78 points beat Team Bill's total of 47 points.
Shooting Accuracy
Team Bill would get things back on track, picking up three more points, for Ryan Strome being the most accurate shooter, going 4 for 6, while they also picked up the best team scoring, making it 8-4.
Shooting Accuracy (Goalies)
Team Bill would pick up another point as Chris Festarini would go 1/8, while Brent Moran would go 0/8.
Hardest Shot
Team Denise would get a point back as each team would take a point when Trevor Petersen and Ryan Strome would tie for hardest shot, while Team Denise would pick up the bonus point for hardest average shot.
Elimination Shootout
The final individual event before the 3-on-3 game was the elimination shootout where all skaters participated in a shootout, where if you scored you survived and if you missed you were eliminated. Team Bill would take home three more points in the Elimination Shootout as Steven Shipley would be the only shooter to score twice and be the last man standing, taking a 13-6 lead heading into the 3-on-3 game.
3-on-3 Game
After eight initial events, it would ultimately come down to the always enjoyable 3-on-3 game. Consisting of two 15 minute run time periods with one minute shifts, there was still a chance for Team Denise, but with a seven goal lead, it certainly looked like this could be Team Bill's year. Despite the long odds, Team Denise would not let up, storming back in the first period, outscoring Team Bill 7-0, to tie things at 13-13! A back and forth second period of the 3-on-3 game would see Team Denise finish of the comeback, outscoring Team Bill 6-5 to take home a 19-18 victory! Brent Moran was spectacular for Team Denise in the comeback making numerous highlight reel saves, while Carter Verhaeghe led the charge offensively with six goals in the 3-on-3 game.
While Team Denise took home the bragging rights once again, the entire IceDogs organization would like to thank the true stars of the day, the fans. The IceDogs appreciate all the fans support and thank all fans who came out to join us for a great day of Family Day fun. We hope to see you back at the rink for a game soon and look forward to seeing everyone back next year as Team Bill tries again to snap Team Denise's five year streak.
