
Taurasi and Pondexter Named 2009 WNBA All-Star Reserve

PHOENIX - The Mercury today announced that Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter have been named 2009 WNBA All-Star reserves. The All-Star Game, the ninth in league history, will be held on Saturday, July 25 at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. and will be televised nationally on ABC at 12:30 p.m. MT.
The two Olympians receive their fourth and third All-Star honors, respectively. Taurasi appeared in the annual midseason contest from 2005-2007, while Pondexter was featured in her first two seasons (2006, 2007). This season marks the third-straight year that the Mercury backcourt due will appear in the All-Star Game together (no All-Star Game in 2008).
Taurasi currently stands as the WNBA's leading scorer (20.7) for the second-straight season. She owns career All-Star Game averages of 10.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists in 23.0 minutes. Pondexter (20.3), who ranks as the league's second-leading scorer behind only Taurasi, has posted 8.0 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 16.0 minutes in her two All-Star appearances.
