Tampa Tarpons News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - After trailing, 4-0, in the fifth, the Tampa Tarpons scored four-straight runs to tie the game before a three-run eighth led the Bradenton Marauders to a 7-4 win in the series-opener on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Bradenton (12-19, 47-49) snapped a six-game losing streak as Tampa (14-16, 49-51) dropped the opener of a seven-game home stand.
Gleyber Torres (2-for-4, 2B, R) played all nine innings at second base in his second rehab game with Tampa. The 20-year-old logged a multi-hit game, but was charged with a pair of fielding errors.
Ronald Torreyes (1-for-3) also played for the Tarpons after being optioned from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 25-year-old also made a fielding error while playing six innings at shortstop.
Nick Green got the nod and fired a perfect first inning before stranding a pair of runners in a scoreless second. The Marauders then pushed across a run in the third.
Jared Oliva and Adrian Valerio reached on back-to-back, one-out singles and Oliva scored when second-baseman Torres misplayed a ground ball hit by Albert Baur. Green got a pair of groundouts to limit the damage.
Estevan Florial lined a leadoff single in the first, but RHP Dario Agrazal retired the next nine batters in a brief start for the Marauders. Agrazal joined Bradenton off the Double-A Altoona disabled list and struck out two batters while throwing 20 of 27 pitches for strikes in three scoreless innings.
Green worked around a pair of walks in the fourth, but the Marauders struck for three runs in the fifth. Oliva singled and advanced to second on a groundout before scoring while Baur reached on a throwing error by Torreyes. Hunter Owen followed with a two-run homer to left-center, giving Bradenton a 4-0 lead.
Tampa got on the board against RHP Evan Piechota in the fifth when Steven Sensley singled and scored on a two-out double by Angel Aguilar , cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Green finished his outing after dealing a 1-2-3 sixth, logging a quality start. The 23-year-old allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in six innings, walking three while striking out four on 98 pitches (62 strikes).
The Tarpons loaded the bases with nobody out when Torreyes singled, Torres doubled and Isiah Gilliam walked. Diego Castillo pinch-ran for Torreyes and scored on a groundout by Dom Thompson-Williams . Piechota then struck out Donny Sands before getting a fly out by Hoy Jun Park to strand a pair.
Sensley singled and Aguilar doubled to open the bottom of the seventh and, one out later, Castillo sliced a game-tying, two-run double into the right field corner. LHP Blake Weiman entered and struck out Torres before getting Gilliam to pop out to strand the go-ahead run.
RHP Kaleb Ort (L, 0-1) struck out two in a perfect seventh, but struggled with command in the eighth. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs and RHP Matt Wivinis relieved Ort. Casey Hughston drew a walk, forcing in a go-ahead run for Bradenton. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly added two more.
Weiman (W, 2-1) retired the side in order in the eighth, completing a perfect inning and two-thirds. RHP Angel German (SV, 1) struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 ninth to end the game.
Wivinis tallied five strikeouts while allowing one walk and one hit in two scoreless relief innings. Sensley (2-for-4, 2R) and Aguilar (2-for-4, 2 2B's, RBI, R) had multi-hit games.
The Tarpons will look to even the series when RHP Garrett Whitlock (3-2, 1.90) squares off against RHP James Marvel (9-5, 3.73) the middle game of the series on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Live play-by-play audio will be available on the Tarpons Radio Network.
On "Tasty Tuesday," fans can enjoy a $24 all-you-can-eat menu from 6:00-8:00 p.m., including: hot dogs, chicken tenders, nachos, fries, popcorn, and fountain soda.
