Alejandro Requena held the St. Lucie Mets at bay through six strong innings, and three hurlers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Threshers blanked the Mets, 3-0 in the series opener at First Data Field on Monday night.

Requena (3-2) limited St. Lucie to just two hits, both singles, and two walks across six scoreless innings. He struck out four on his way to earning the victory.

Jonathan Hennigan added two shutout innings in relief, and Addison Russ finished it off with a perfect ninth to earn his third save for Clearwater (18-12) (50-48).

The Threshers got on the board in the third against Mets starter Anthony Kay (2-2), when Grenny Cumana reached on an error and Jose Gomez dropped down a bunt single. Luke Williams then walked to load the bases.

Mickey Moniak followed with a sacrifice fly to left, plating Cumana to put Clearwater up, 1-0.

That score held into the eighth, when the Threshers added a pair of insurance runs.

Jose Pujols led off with a walk against reliever Trey Cobb, and with one out, Edgar Cabral ripped a triple to left to bring home Pujols.

After Seth Dacis took over, Kyle Martin double to right to score Cabral and make it 3-0.

Game two of the three-game set will take place on Tuesday, as Mauricio Llovera takes the hill against Joe Cavallaro. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
