Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Tortugas defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals 6-4 behind another strong outing from LHP Scott Moss and a sloppy defensive game on Monday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The two teams combined to commit five defensive miscues.
Moss, a graduate of DeLand High School, improves 5-0 with a 3.46 ERA in eight starts in front of his home fans at The Jack.
The Tortugas got the games scoring started in the bottom of the first. Taylor Trammell led off the inning with a walk, then moved to second after a Tyler Stephenson single. Brantley Bell would then drive Trammell in with a double for the nights first run. Stephenson ended up going first-to-third on the play and came into score when Ibandel Isabel reached on an error to make it 2-0.
After going hitless through the first three innings against Moss, the Cardinals tied up the game in the top of the fourth. Dylan Carlson led off the inning with a double, then moved up to third after a bunt single from Shane Billings. Moss then walked Stefan Trosclair to load up the bases with one-out. Ryan McCarvel followed that by hitting a comebacker right off of Moss, leading to Palm Beach's first run. The Cardinals then tied the game with two-outs when Danny Hudzina reached on an error from Bell.
The Tortugas didn't waste any time getting the runs back. Isabel reached singled to begin the frame, then moved to second after Stuart Fairchild walked. Alberti Chavez bunted both runners up 90-feet ahead of Randy Ventura, who delivered with a two-run single to put the Tortugas up 4-2.
Palm Beach cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh. Chase Pinder led off the frame with a single off of RHP Jeremy Kivel, then moved first-to-third on a wild pitch from Kivel and a throwing error from Stephenson. Pinder would score on a Brian O'Keefe single to make it a 4-3 game.
Daytona got the runs back in their half of the seventh. With runners on the corners and Isabel at the plate, Bell stole second, then moved to third on a throwing error from O'Keefe, also allowing Stephenson to score from third to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Bell would then score when RHP Jason Zgardowski was called for a balk to make it 6-3.
The Cardinals rounded out the scoring in the top of the eighth when Irving Lopez hit a two-out, solo homerun off of LHP Carlos Diaz to make it 6-4. It was Irving's first hit in the FSL.
Moss (11-3) allows two runs (one earned) on four hits in five innings for the victory. He walked three and struck out four. RHP Casey Meisner (5-3) is handed the loss. He allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out just one. RHP Ryan Hendrix picked up his eighth save. He tossed a scoreless ninth inning, allowing a hit and striking out two.
