St. Lucie Mets News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Tarpons clipped the St. Lucie Mets 3-2 on Wednesday night at Steinbrenner Field.
Benjamin Cowles laced a RBI single in the seventh inning off Mets starter Junior Santos to break a 1-1 tie. Carlos Narvaez followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 Tarpons lead.
Mets catcher Juan Uriarte hit a wall-scraping triple in the eighth and was awarded home plate when reliever Wellington Diaz was called for a balk. Uriarte's run made it 3-2, but the Mets comeback would stall.
Diaz walked Alex Ramirez with one out in the ninth. He recovered to strike out Kevin Kendall, then the catcher Narvaez threw out Ramirez trying to steal second to end the game.
Santos (4-4) took a tough loss for the Mets. Just before he was about to throw his first pitch of the evening the umpires waved the teams off the field due to lightning. After an hour and 22 minute delay, Santos finally threw his first pitch. He ended up lasting 6.2 innings and limiting the Tarpons to three runs (two earned) and six hits. Santos walked three, struck out five and threw a season-high 101 pitches.
The Tarpons lost their starter Beck Way after one inning due to the delay. Three relievers pieced together the final eight innings. Clay Aguilar pitched 4.0 innings out of the delay, holding the Mets to one run.
Michael Giancone pitched two perfect innings to get the win. He improved his record to 7-0 in 17 relief appearances.
Narvaez got the scoring started for the Tarpons in the third inning with a leadoff home run against Santos.
Brandon McIlwain tied the game with a solo home run in the fifth. It was his seventh homer of the season.
Uriarte's triple was the only other hit for the Mets.
Mets reliever Sammy Tavarez pitched 1.1 scoreless innings behind Santos.
The Mets (48-41) and Tarpons (61-28) will play the third game of their series at Steinbrenner Field on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
