Kansas City Monarchs News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - As they return home after a 10-day roadtrip, the Kansas City T-Bones announced a series of moves before Friday's game that includes signing veteran pitcher Mike Nannini along with former Park University outfielder Christian Torres.
Nannini, 34 (08-09-80), a native of Henderson, Nev., who is 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, was a first-round pick in 1998 by the Houston Astros. During his 13-year professional career, he has reached triple-A with then-Florida, Toronto, Seattle, the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh. Nannini has a career record of 81-70 with four saves and a 4.13 ERA in 294 games. He has 1,089 strikeouts and 417 walks.
Nannini walked away from baseball in 2008, saying he had lost his "passion." He started a comeback last season, however, with Amarillo and the T-Bones. Nannini appeared in only three games for Kansas City, going 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in 17 innings. He started Friday night's game against Gary SouthShore.
Torres, who's 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, finished his career at nearby Park University in May as one of the school's top offensive players, after batting .396 with seven home runs, 15 doubles and 16 stolen bases in 38 games. He's now 10th on the school's career list for hits with 120, sixth in doubles (27) and second in triples (7). He was selected for the American Midwest Conference Baseball All-Conference Team at the end of this past season.
To make room for Nannini and Torres, the T-Bones placed pitcher Kyle DeVore on the Inactive List, and they traded first baseman Joe Rapp to Southern Illinois of the Frontier League for a player to be determined. In 32 games this season, Rapp was batting .216 with four home runs and 15 RBIs.
