Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Matt Jackson gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes one of the best starts of the season.
Trouble is, the team's offense couldn't help him out.
Jackson pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing only two runs on 11 scattered hits, but the Goldeyes could coax only one run across the plate and fell 2-1 in the first game of a three-game set with the Ottawa Champions.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 1-4 in the first five games of this seven-game homestand. Winnipeg is now 16-23 on the season.
"Matt really battled tonight," Goldeyes manager Rick Forney said of his starter. "This was a good outing for him. We know he's been fighting it the last few outings, but he went 6 1/3 tonight and we're pleased for him. His fastball had a real nice tilt on it and his slider was very good. He got some pitches elevated and he was on the edge a couple of times, but he really battled. We're happy for him tonight."
The Goldeyes scored their only run in the fourth inning when Brad Boyer singled, stole second and scored on a single by rookie Chris Robinson. It was Robinson's first RBI as a professional.
Other than that, the Goldeyes got runners into scoring position only three other times in the ball game. Casey Haerther, who had a single and a double, and Boyer, who had a pair of singles, were the only Goldeyes to have multi-hit games.
The Champions had two runs on 12 hits while the Goldeyes managed only one run on nine hits.
"We're not the same team two nights in a row," said Forney. "I thought early in the ball game that their starter (Andrew Werner) had the ball elevated and we had some good at-bats. We were hitting the ball hard in the middle of the field, but we just couldn't get the hits when we needed them. He got better as the game went on and their bullpen, (Tyler) Wilson and (Alan) DeRatt were very good tonight."
Ottawa finished with two runs on 12 hits as the two Goldeyes relievers - Brendan Lafferty and Jailen Peguero -- pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit baseball.
Werner (5-3, 3.38 ERA) got the win for the Champions, while Jackson (2-5, 6.04 ERA), was tagged with the hard-luck loss. DeRatt picked the save.
The Goldeyes and Champions will play Game 2 of this three-game series on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at Shaw Park. Tony Smith (2-0, 2.96 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Wilmer Font (3-2, 6.32 ERA) will take to the bump for Ottawa.
