Syracuse Rallies Past Buffalo, 7-6

A four-run Syracuse sixth inning and an unearned run in the seventh gave the Mets just enough on the scoreboard to defeat the Bisons, 7-6, Saturday night from Trenton Thunder Ballpark. Kevin Smith and Riley Adams hit back-to-back home runs, but the Herd let a three-run advantage slip through its grasp in dropping their third game in the last four days to their Thruway rival.

Buffalo held a 5-2 lead after five, but Syracuse rallied against a usually stingy Herd bullpen. Reliever Casey Lawrence took over for Nick Allgeyer in the sixth inning and allowed a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Following an RBI-ground out from David Rodriguez, Quinn Brodey launched a three-run home run to left field to knock Lawrence from the game and give Syracuse a lead for the first time since the first inning.

The Bisons tied the game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Cullen Large's two-out RBI-single, but Syracuse went back to work in the seventh. A fielding error by Smith at short preceded a pair of walks issued by rehabbing Blue Jays righty Patrick Murphy to load the bases once again for the Mets. When the Herd couldn't complete an inning-ending doubleplay on a grounder from Cheslor Cuthbert, the game-winning run was allowed to score from third.

The Bisons built a 5-2 cushion thanks to back-to-back bombs from Smith and Adams in the first inning. Smith turned on a fastball from Syracuse starter Jerad Eickhoff for a two-run shot, his team-best sixth of the season. Adams then quickly tied his teammate with his sixth homer of the year, staying back on an Eickhoff breaking ball four pitches later and driving out to left.

After his two-RBI night on Friday night, Tyler White added to the Bisons lead with an RBI-single in the fourth inning and Christian Colon crushed a run-scoring double in the fifth that put the Bisons up 5-2.

The Herd was in control thanks to five solid innings from Allgeyer. The Triple-A rookie struck out seven and allowed just three hits through five innings. He was poised for his second Bisons win before Syracuse rallied for the victory.

Even after the four-run Syracuse sixth, the Bisons missed a golden opportunity to regain control of the game. Trailing 6-5, Adams was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and Forrest Wall followed with a double down the right field line. After rounding third base, Adams decided to go back to the bag instead of trying to score. Anticipating third base being open, the speedy Wall ventured too far off second base and tagged hit out trying to return. That removed Wall from scoring position for when Large singled to centerfield to only tie the game instead of give Buffalo the lead.

The loss for Buffalo went to Murphy, who allowed an unearned run without giving up a hit. He walked three batters in his 1.1 innings of work.

The Bisons and Mets will wrap up their series Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Herd needing a win for a split of the set. Thomas Hatch is scheduled to start the finale for Buffalo.
