Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, held on for a 5-4 victory over the Buffalo Bisons Tuesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. With the win, the Chiefs improved to 7-4 against the Bisons in 2010. Buffalo is now 1-4 at Alliance Bank Stadium this season.
With the score locked at 1-1, the Chiefs broke things open with a pair of runs in the third. Syracuse starting pitcher Jeff Mandel poked a single into centerfield to lead off the inning. Boomer Whiting walked and Justin Maxwell laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out for Chase Lambin. The second baseman lofted a sac fly to left, scoring Mandel for the Chiefs' second run. A batter later, rightfielder Jason Botts bashed an RBI double past Buffalo centerfielder Jorge Padilla, giving Syracuse a 3-1 edge.
The Bisons (44-42) piled up three runs in the next half-inning to take back the lead. With rightfielder Fernando Martinez and third baseman Mike Cervenak aboard and nobody out, Lucas Duda swatted a double over Justin Maxwell's head in center. Martinez and Cervenak both hustled home on the play to tie the score at three. J.R. House singled home Duda in the next at bat to make it 4-3 Buffalo.
The Chiefs (49-38) went up 5-4 with a pair of sixth-inning runs off of Bisons reliever Mike O'Connor. After Botts and Seth Bynum hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, Carlos Maldonado and Chris Duncan failed to reach base, putting two on with two outs for Pedro Lopez. Lopez punched a double into the right centerfield gap, plating Botts and Bynum with the Syracuse's fourth and fifth runs of the night.
Syracuse reliever Jesse English tossed three scoreless frames for his second win. Josh Wilkie worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth for his third save.
John Lujan gave up two runs on three hits in his one inning of work and was hit with the loss for Buffalo.
With two hits Tuesday night, Jason Botts has had more than one hit in five out of his last six games for Syracuse. Botts is hitting .514 (18-345) over his last 10 games. Seth Bynum, who hit a walk-off homer Monday night, also collected two hits for the Chiefs.
Lucas Duda stayed hot for the Bisons, going three for four with a couple of RBI. Duda has knocked in six runs in the series.
Syracuse and Buffalo will square off in the series finale Wednesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Jason Jones (1-2, 3.63), who nearly tossed a perfect game in his last outing for the Chiefs, will start against IL All-Star Pat Misch (8-3, 3.40). First pitch will be at 7:00.
