Colorado Springs, CO - The Switchbacks defeated Fresno FC late off of a Shane Malcolm free kick in front of a sell out crowd of 5,000 fans on Saturday night; the first sell-out at Weidner Field.
Looking to keep the momentum going after winning in Portland 4-1 behind four second-half goals, the Switchbacks made no changes to the starting XI to face Fresno FC on Saturday night. The first half started slowly with each team getting a feel for the game. The Switchbacks best opportunity of the first half came to Jordan Schweitzer who just missed the goal from distance. Fresno had the better opportunity as the ball fell to a Fresno FC player just six yards from goal but he put his chance over the crossbar.
The second half started in similar fashion with both teams trading possession for the first 15 minutes. Shane Malcolm fired off a shot from outside the box in the 60th minute, but the ball was put just over the crossbar. Late in the game, the Switchbacks won a free kick about 24 yards from goal to set up the match-deciding kick. In the 86th minute, Shane Malcolm hit the free kick high, clipping the top of the wall on it's way to the top corner of the goal. This would end up being the only shot on target for either team as the game ended 1-0 for the Switchbacks at Weidner Field in front of the sell-out crowd.
The Switchbacks stay home on June 30th to face San Antonio FC on World Cup Night where the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a vuvuzela courtesy of Weidner Apartment Homes. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here. Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 5:00 PM. The Switchbacks will then have a quick turnaround when they face Orange County SC on July 3rd for Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza night where the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a scarf presented by Oakwood Homes. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here.
"I think both teams kind of canceled each other out. We played a similar formation and similar styles of play I would say," said Man of the Match, Shane Malcolm. "Both teams had a couple chances. Overall, I think it was a pretty balanced game and the team that wanted it more was going to win."
