Colorado Springs, CO - The Switchbacks played Reno 1868 FC to a scoreless draw in the 100th USL Match in club history.
Looking for their first win since the 4-0 thrashing of Reno at Greater Nevada Field on April 14th, the Switchbacks welcomed Reno 1868 FC to Weidner Field in for the club's 100th USL Match. A relatively uneventful first half saw both sides have a couple of chances, but nothing really came of any of them. Strong backlines and even play in the midfield thwarted any attack. The Switchbacks had a couple of late corners but came up empty every trip. The two sides would head into halftime locked at 0-0.
Both sides came out with a little more intensity in the second half. Reno 1868 nearly broke the deadlock in the 51st-minute as Jerry van Ewijk fired off a rocket from distance that went just over the bar. Josh Suggs had a handful of dangerous free kick opportunities and corners, but the Switchbacks weren't able to capitalize on any of them. The Switchbacks had one last opportunity in stoppage time but came up empty on the Suggs free kick. The match would end in a scoreless draw.
"We're doing well being aggressive when we get into the final third, but we're just not there," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "It's like a broken record. It's the final pass, the final shot, the final decision that's just not there right now. Maybe it's time to find some new blood to bring in."
"We're really just missing that final product," said Man of the Match, Luke Vercollone. "There is a lot of positives we have going for us. We're playing phenomenally defensively, they're unstoppable. Once we figure out how to put the ball in the back of the net we'll be set. We're getting a lot of dangerous chances but we're just unlucky to come away without a win."
The Switchbacks return home next Friday, May 11th as they host expansion side Las Vegas Lights FC. The first 500 fans will receive a Switchbacks hat courtesy of Pikes Peak Brewing. Fans are also encouraged to wear RED as we Remember Everyone Deployed for Military Appreciation Night. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here. Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 5:00 PM.
