Fresno FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO - An unlucky bounce at the 67th minute snapped the Foxes seven-match unbeaten streak in the Alamo City, as Fresno FC fell 2-1 to host San Antonio FC in a Cinco de Mayo showdown at Toyota Stadium.
Level at 1-1, San Antonio's Sonny Guadarrama fired a shot from 30 yards out that Fresno goalkeeper Kyle Reynish kept out of the goal with a diving fingertip save. The ball, however, took a deflection off the crossbar and bounced off Reynish's back and into the net to give the hosts the go-ahead goal.
It was the theme of the evening for Fresno FC, who again outshot San Antonio for the second time this season, this time 16-11.
The Foxes had two late chances to find another equalizer, but both were stopped by the hands of goalkeeper Diego Restrepo, who came away with four massive saves on the night.
At the 81st minute, Noah Verhoeven laced a strike from the half-moon only to see a leaping Restrepo keep it out. Six minutes later, substitute Rony Argueta fired a laser from 22 yards out, only to have Restrepo, again, keep the hosts in front.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Jemal Johnson made it level with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. On the end of a long ball from Kyle Reynish, Foxes' forward Rodolfo dropped a back-heel pass to Johnson who fired it home on a first-touch finish.
The Foxes fell behind in the first half as Alex Bruce scored the initial go-ahead goal at the 20th minute.
Fresno's latest acquisition, Justin Fiddes, made his professional debut, making the starting 11 at right back against San Antonio FC. Fiddes led the Foxes with eight tackles and also recorded three clearances and one interception while making a team-high 62 touches on the ball.
Fresno FC returns to Central California for its Wednesday, May 9 matchup against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Chukchansi Park.
