Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (4-0-3) extended its club-record unbeaten streak to seven games to start a season with a 2-1 victory against Toronto FC II (0-5-2) on Saturday at Marina Auto Stadium in Rochester, New York.
The Hounds capitalized early with a goal from Neco Brett in the 12th minute and held the lead for the remainder of the match. Kevin Kerr also added a first-half tally in the 36th minute. With the result, Pittsburgh still has yet to trail in a game this season (630 minutes).
How It Happened
It did not take long for Saturday's match to feel like déjà vu. Following his seven-point hat trick performance in the teams' first meeting this year, Neco Brett once again found himself on the score sheet.
After Jordan Dover pressured an opposing player, it led to the ball landing at the feet of Kevin Kerr along the end line inside of the penalty area. The long-time Hounds veteran then sent a deflected ball to Brett, who one-timed a right-footed shot into the net from atop of the six-yard box in the 12th minute.
The Kingston, Jamaica native was once again at the center of the offensive attack in the 36th minute - this time playing the role of a distributer. The striker played a give-and-go with Kerr, who then sprinted into the 18-yard box and released a left-footed shot from the penalty dot past Toronto goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell to extend Pittsburgh's lead to 2-0.
Before Pittsburgh stretched its lead to two goals, Toronto FC II had a chance for an equalizer in the 21st minute. Off a counterattack, Toronto forward Ben Spencer sprinted and collected the ball on the right side of the penalty area. The striker then sent a shot at Hounds goalkeeper Dan Lynd, who lunged and batted it away from danger across the penalty box.
The Hounds held strong for most of the second half, allowing the only Toronto tally in stoppage time.
Scoring the goal for Toronto FC II, Shaan Hundal received a ball on the right side of the penalty area from Mariano Miño. The second-half substitute then beat Lynd with his right foot to bring the score to 2-1.
Earlier in the second half, Toronto had a couple additional scoring chances. In the 59th minute, Aidan Daniels sprinted at Pittsburgh defender Hugh Roberts and turned him around, which freed him up for a shot from just outside the penalty area. However, Daniels' take went wide of the left post.
Just two minutes later, Luca Uccello also released a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box. Like the aforementioned try, Uccello's shot missed wide of the left post.
