IL1 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

SWB Playoff Bound

August 29, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

PLAYOFF BOUND: Closed by one of the franchise's most dominant relief performances of all-time, the RailRiders beat the Red Wings on Sunday, 3-1, and secured the franchise's 13th playoff appearance and seventh in a decade as the Yankees' top affiliate. SWB has made the IL playoffs in: 1992, 1999-02, 2006-10, 2012, 2015-16. The franchise's lone Governors' Cup win came in 2008.

HODOR: Reliever Jonathan Holder closed the game by striking out 12 of the 13 men he faced including the first 11 in a row for a storybook save. There is no official IL record for consecutive strikeouts. Hall of Famer Tom Seaver set the Major League record with 10 for the Mets against the Padres on April 22, 1970. Seaver retired the final 10 hitters of the game via the strikeout. His Mets won that game 2-1 and Seaver whiffed 19 Padres while tossing all nine innings. Earlier today, Holder was named the IL Pitcher of the Week for his efforts. On the season, he has gone 2-0 with six saves in six tries. Over 20.1 innings, he has allowed just seven hits (.103 BAA), two runs (0.89) and no walks while striking out 35 (15.5/9 IP).

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK: The RailRiders' pitching staff combined for a franchise-record 22 strikeouts while the Red Wings scored just one unearned run. The strikeout total obliterated the team mark of 17 which had been reached thrice: June 10, 2007 versus Durham in nine innings; April 10, 2009 at Lehigh Valley in 11 innings; and May 15, 2015 at Durham, also in 11 innings. The bullpen's 14 strikeouts also broke the franchise record of 13 set on Aug. 18, 2004 versus Rochester. The team's 1,125 total strikeouts this season rank second in SWB history, trailing only the 2013 unit's 1,157.

SHORT DIVISION: With the playoffs secure, the magic number countdown shifts to the IL North crown. SWB has a magic number of four to win the division. Any combination of wins by the RailRiders or losses by the Lehigh Valley IronPigs adding up to four would sew up a share of the divisional title. The RailRiders would then win the tiebreaker for the division champ's home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs based on head-to-head record. It's a magic number of five to win the division outright.

ROAD WARRIORS: With a win tonight, the RailRiders would tie the 2002 Red Barons for the most road victories in franchise history.

TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: The RailRiders' 23 shutout wins pace the minors and continue to redefine the single-season franchise record. The 2009 SWB Yankees previously held the franchise record with 16 blankings.

FTW!: The RailRiders' 84 wins make for SWB's highest total since the 2012 vagabond then-SWB Yankees took the IL North with 84. Even with a cancelled contest that lessened the RailRiders' 2016 schedule to 143 games, the team is on pace to win 89 games. No IL club has won 90+ games since the then-SWB Red Barons won a franchise-record 91 affairs in 2002. The RailRiders boast Triple-A's best record and stand tied with Double-A Reading for the most wins in baseball.

ALL IN: Elsewhere on the farm, both Low-A Charleston and Advanced-A Tampa had secured postseason berths in the South Atlantic League and Florida State League respectively. Double-A Trenton joined the bunch with a thrilling 15-inning victory at Portland (Boston Red Sox) on Saturday, 4-2. Trenton could still take the Eastern Division. It sits just 1.5 games back of first-place Reading. The Thunder and R-Phils face each other over their final four regular-season games Sept. 2-5. The Short Season-A Staten Island Yankees own the NY-Penn League's wild-card chase by 1.5 games with a magic number of seven.

OFF THE RAILS: Both Ben Gamel (T-2nd, 148) and Donovan Solano (1st, 151) have a chance to become the second SWB player in the Yankees era to lead the IL in hits...Jose Pirela (163) accomplished the feat in 2014...In his first Triple-A outing of the season, starter Bryan Mitchell recorded a Triple-A career-high eight strikeouts.
