International League Players of the Week
August 29, 2016 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Rochester center fielder Byron Buxton and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre reliever Jonathan Holder have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from August 22-28. Buxton is now a three-time recipient, having previously claimed IL Batter of the Week honors Aug. 10-16, 2015 and May 23-29, 2016. Rochester is now tied with Durham and Lehigh Valley for the most weekly awards this season with five. Meanwhile Holder is the third member of the RailRiders to be so honored in 2016, following Kyle Higashioka (June 6-12) and Aaron Judge (June 20-26).
BYRON BUXTON, Rochester Red Wings IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Byron Buxton did his best to help Rochester's playoff hopes stay alive this week, hitting .353 and leading the International League with four home runs, eight runs scored, twelve hits, and 25 total bases. He hit safely in all seven games this week including a three-hit outburst in Monday's 5-3 win over Gwinnett. Later in the week he went deep in four straight games, becoming just the second Red Wing in 26 years to accomplish the feat. Buxton is now hitting .292 with five homers and 9 RBI since rejoining Rochester earlier this month from the Twins.
22-year-old Byron Buxton is in his fifth season as a professional player since being selected with the second overall pick of the 2012 draft by Minnesota. He was Baseball America's 2013 Minor League Player of the Year, and he has been ranked by MLB.com as the second-best prospect in all of baseball. He is a veteran of 109 games with the Twins since last season. Buxton is a native of Baxley, Georgia.
JONATHAN HOLDER, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Right-handed reliever Jonathan Holder saved two games this week, led the International League with sixteen strikeouts, and delivered a performance for the ages in Sunday's playoff clinching victory for the RailRiders at Rochester. Holder allowed only two hits with no walks over 6.0 innings pitched this week, beginning with a perfect frame to save Monday's game in which he struck out two batters. Following another scoreless inning pitched Friday, he came on Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field and tossed 4.0 dominant innings that included a remarkable run of eleven consecutive strikeouts. Overall he fanned twelve of the thirteen batters he faced to wrap up SWB's 3-1 win and guarantee the team at least the Wild Card playoff berth. Since being promoted from Double-A in mid-July, Holder has now struck out 35 hitters in 20.1 innings without a walk.
23-year-old Jonathan Holder is in his third season pitching professionally after being selected by the Yankees in the 6th round of the 2014 draft. Prior to this season, 29 of his 35 appearances in the minors had come as a starter, but this year he's worked exclusively out of the bullpen. He has yet to make his Major League debut. Holder is a native of Gulfport, Mississippi.
