SWB Game Notes

April 30, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

OH WHAT A NIGHT: What a night indeed for the RailRiders - past and present. The current RailRiders finally returned to play after back-to-back rainouts with a doubleheader sweep of the Charlotte Knights, 5-4 and 5-0.

DING, DING, DINGER: Corban Joseph homered and drove in three in game one. His four home runs lead the team. Joseph started the season as a .200 bat after his first eight games. Since then, he has gone 18-for-58 (.310) with five doubles, all four homers, nine RBIs and 11 runs scored over 14 games. Only Syracuse's Chris Marrero entered today with more IL home runs over that time.

HEARING THE CALL: Joseph's night only got better as the infielder got the call to the big leagues. Earlier today, the Yankees made it official by placing Kevin Youkilis on the DL (lumbar spine sprain) and recalling Joseph who will make his Major League debut when he appears for Bombers.

DAS BOOT: Pitching and timely hitting told the tale in the nightcap. Veteran right-hander Chris Bootcheck tossed six scoreless innings of two-hit ball in lowering his ERA to a league-best 0.38 and lifting his record to 3-0.

TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: Bootcheck and Josh Spence teamed up on the squad's third shutout win of the season. Bootcheck has started two of the three blankings. Only Columbus and Gwinnett have had more shutout successes in the IL.

TWO-OUT THUNDER: All five runs in the nightcap crossed on two-out hits, including four RBIs for Zoilo Almonte who went 2-for-4 with a double. Almonte has more hits with runners in scoring position than any other active RailRider. He has gone 7-for-22 (.318) with two doubles, one home run and 13 RBIs. His efforts last night tied him for the team lead in RBIs (14). Almonte has particularly thrived away from PNC Field. In eight road games played, his slashes stand at .448/.543/.724 for an OPS of 1.267.

DELIGHTFUL DEBUT: Catcher Jeff Farnham made his Triple-A debut one to remember. The career .233 hitter went 3-for-3, scored a run and gunned down a would-be base stealer. He also caught Bootcheck and Spence in the shutout.

THE SHOW: In the Bronx, the Opening Day battery for the RailRiders bookended the game for the Bombers. Catcher Austin Romine started behind the plate to catch Andy Pettitte. Southpaw Vidal Nuno closed out the contest with three scoreless innings in his Major League debut. Romine missed most of last season with a back injury. Nuno, a former 48th-round pick (1,445th overall) by Cleveland, was released by the Indians as a Low-A player with a 4.96 ERA in 2010. The former Baker University (NAIA) star found new life in indy ball with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League before signing with the Yankees and pitching in Short Season ball in 2011. Two years later, he is in the bigs.

CASE OF THE MONDAYS: The RailRiders improved to 5-0 in Monday baseball with yesterday's sweep.

GOIN' SOLO: The RailRiders have blasted 14 home runs this year thanks to Joseph's solo shot last night. While its home/road splits are dead even, 10 (71%) of the homers by Dave Miley's squad have come with nobody on base.

OFF THE RAILS: Charlotte suffered its league-worst fifth shutout loss...The Knights have yet to win while not allowing a run...Farnham caught Luis Durango trying to steal second in the third in the nightcap...SWB leads the IL by nabbing half of its foes' thieves (12 of 24). Toledo (.412) is the only other team with an efficiency number above .394.
