Corcino, Bats Break Losing Streaks with 6-2 Win

April 30, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky - The Louisville Bats (11-14) opened the game with four runs in the first three innings, withstood a couple of Iron Pig threats and coasted to a 6-2 victory over Lehigh Valley (10-14) snapping their five game losing streak. Louisville is currently 2-5 on their eight game homestand, with one left Tuesday night against the Iron Pigs.

Daniel Corcino (1-4) entered the game on his own four game losing streak in Triple-A ball, but it didn't seem to affect him. Corcino pitched six innings of one run baseball, giving up six hits and striking out five. It was the first Triple-A win of his career. Mike MacDougal (H, 1) and Kevin Whelan put up three productive innings out of the bullpen, only giving up one run and three hits in the final three innings. Lehigh Valley starter Adam Morgan (L, 1-2) also went six innings and gave up six hits, but he allowed four runs and gave up two homeruns.

The Bats exploded in the first inning thanks to Neftali Soto's two run homerun that scored Henry Rodriguez who was on base via a hit by pitch. Soto was a perfect four for four on the night, scoring twice and adding two RBI's. Kristopher Negron got in on the homerun strategy as he belted one to the left field berm in the bottom of the second, giving the Bats a 3-0 advantage.

The Iron Pigs first threat was in the top of the fourth, when Daniel Ruf and Delmon Young hit back to back doubles, eventually scoring Ruf. Where Corcino had fallen short this season, he shined tonight. He struck out the next two batters, allowed a single and then got Leandro Castro to pop out and end the inning. Lehigh Valley cut the deficit down to two in the top of the seventh when Cesar Hernandez singled home Castro who was waiting on third.

Josh Fellhauer pinch hit for Corcino to open the inning, drawing a walk. Billy Hamilton collected his only hit of the night, doubling to right and putting himself on second with Fellhauer on third. Rodriguez hit a ground ball to short, and Pete Orr decided to come home instead of get the sure out at first. Fellhauer slid in behind the catcher, avoiding the tag and adding another run to Louisville's total. Hamilton stole third and then advanced home on the next play as Rodriguez attempted a steal of second base.

Louisville spread the wealth tonight as five different players scored a run to help break the five game skid. Rodriguez, Soto, Perez and Negron all collected an RBI. Mike Hessman broke out of his mini slump last night going three for four, and followed it up tonight with a double. Soto's homerun was his second in as many nights and second of the season. Negron's homerun was his first of the season.

Lehigh Valley second baseman Cesar Hernandez continued his hot hitting as he extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Tomorrow is the final game of the Bats' eight game homestand, with an 11:05am first pitch. It's also $1 Hot Dog & $1 Pepsi day presented by Meijer, Pepsi, Gen X Radio & the Courier-Journal. On the mound for Louisville is RHP Chad Reineke (3-0, 0.42) going up against the Iron Pigs' RHP Ethan Martin (1-2, 8.31).
