Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Bats' (12-14) offense put up a season-high nine runs, coming out hot with three runs in the home half of the first. Starter Chad Reineke wasn't able to hold the lead, but Kristopher Negron's grand slam gave the Bats a lead they would not relinquish. The IronPigs (10-15) did some hitting of their own, but it wasn't enough as the Bats won 9-5. Chad Reineke was on the mound for the Bats, it was his third start and sixth appearance of the season. With a stellar 0.42 ERA to his name- just one earned run in 22.1 innings- he has filled the spot vacated by Tony Cingrani masterfully. However, this day was not as dominant as the Bats' veteran righty has been used to so far this season.
Leading off the game, Lehigh Valley outfielder Jermaine Mitchell launched a homer to straight-away center field. This was an ominous sign for the Bats, as they're 0-11 on the season when the opponent scores first. A second run also scored in the inning on a Reineke balk.
Not to be outdone, the Bats' offense came out looking good. The Bats had the bases loaded with no outs in the first, looking to improve upon their abysmal 0-for-18 mark this season with the bases loaded. A walk by Felix Perez pushed the Bats' first run across, but he was followed by Mike Hessman who grounded into a double play, pushing the Bats' line with the bases loaded to 0-for-19 this season. The Bats took a 3-2 lead in the inning on a Denis Phipps RBI single.
Darin Ruf of the IronPigs continued his assault on Louisville pitching, tying up the game in the fourth with a solo shot and driving in two more in the fifth. The homer was Ruf's third of the series, and he finished the series 8-for-16.
Reineke exited after 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out two.
In the sixth inning, the Bats broke free of their bases-loaded 0-for in a big way. After a pop-up with one out by Nevin Ashley made the chances of a rally seem bleak, Negron launched a line drive onto the concourse in left. The grand slam pushed the Bats lead to 7-5, and they wouldn't look back. Jose Arredondo (W, 1-1) entered the game to begin the sixth, and provided some excellent work out of the bullpen for the Bats. Arredondo was perfect for his three innings of work, striking out five.
A Perez double in the seventh provided two runs of insurance, and the Bats would hold on to that 9-5 victory. Perez finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs batted in.
With Billy Hamilton getting the day off, it was Josh Fellhauer in the leadoff spot, and he filled in nicely, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Neftali Soto extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 1-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
The Bats hit the road for a 10-game road trip, playing at Buffalo and Lehigh Valley, before returning home on Friday, May 10 when they will face Buffalo.
