Sussex County Miners News Release
Dayton, OH - The official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Sussex County Miners infielder Trey Hair and Ottawa Champions starting pitcher Phillippe Aumont have been named batter and pitcher of the week, respectively.
Hair has kicked off the 2019 season with a sizzling hot bat. Over his first nine games, he has hit an astronomical .471 (16-34) with eight runs scored, five doubles, one homer and 10 RBIs. This includes posting five multi-hit games including four two-hit games and 4-4 night with two RBIs against the Trois-Riveres Aigles. The 24-year old Hickman, Nebraska native was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays out of the University of Evansville in the 34th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft. Debuting with the Princeton Rays in the Appalachian League (Rookie), he hit .286 (62-217) with 18 doubles, 10 homers and 49 RBIs. Hair split the 2018 season with the Hudson Valley Renegades (New York-Penn League, Short Season Single-A) and the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Midwest League, Single-A) and hit .303 (71-234) with 19 doubles, four homers and 25 RBIs.
Aumont has begun the year by authoring a pair of quality starts that netted a 1-0 record and a minuscule 0.75 ERA with 17 strikeouts and only one walk over 12 innings pitched. Despite not earning a decision in his season debut against the New Jersey Jackals, he threw six innings while fanning eight and only yielding two runs (one earned), one walk and one hit. Aumont followed up this effort by earning his first win of the season in an 8-1 victory on the road against the Rockland Boulders. Over six dominant innings, he logged nine strikeouts and didn't walk a batter while only allowing one unearned run and one hit. The 30-year-old native of Val-des-Monts, Quebec, last played for the Champions during the 2017 season when he went 5-8 in 17 games with a 4.51 ERA and 103 strikeouts. This season, Aumont is playing and serving as the Champions' pitching coach. Originally drafted in the first round (11th overall) by the Seattle Mariners in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft out of Ecole Du Versant, Gatineau, Quebec, he spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies between 2012 and 2015 before signing with the Champions in 2017. Last year he pitched in the Detroit Tigers organization.
The Can-Am League is in its 15th season. The league's teams are playing a 95-game schedule that includes series against the Cuban National Team and Japan's Shikoku Island Team. The Can-Am League has been a leader in several areas, including the implementation of speed up rules that dramatically reduced game times league-wide. The League has also been the most progressive independent league in the past five years, by hosting international teams, most notably from Cuba and Japan.
