
Surf win 10-6 over Rapidz

(OTTAWA, ON) - Looking to split the series with Atlantic City the Ottawa Rapidz squared off with the Surf in front of 1,785 fans at Rapidz Stadium. They completed the first half of the season with a 10-6 loss.
The Surf opened the scoring with Toronto, ON native Anthony Granato doubling to lead off the game and later scoring on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Surf lead after one inning. The Rapidz responded in second when Rapidz catcher Kyle Geiger took Surf pitcher Rory Shortell deep over the left field wall to even the game at one after two innings.
Scoring three more runs on four hits in the top of the third, the Surf retook the lead 4-1 heading into the bottom of the inning. The visitors added one more run in the fourth and sixth innings and three in the fifth to break the game wide open leading 9-1 after seven innings.
The Rapidz made a late charge, scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth. However, it was not quite enough as Josh Burrus hit a home run and the Surf held on to win 10-6.
Earning the win for the Surf was starter Rory Shortell (2-1) who went seven complete innings, allowing only one run (earned) on six hits, with seven strikeouts and zero walks. For the Rapidz, Tanner Watson (1-2) is credited with the loss, having allowed eight runs (all earned) on 13 hits, with one walk and two strikeouts including his 500th in his professional baseball career.
The Rapidz announced before the game that they have signed Stittsville, ON native Daniel Desclouds. The right handed hurler last played independent baseball with the Alexandria Aces (United League) in 2006 and then with Northwestern State University until 2005. Until joining the Rapidz he was pitching with the Kanata Selects of the National Capital Baseball League (NCBL). He is 6'1" and 190 pounds.
The Rapidz have the second series of their home stand tomorrow Sunday, July 13 at 1:05pm against their national rivals the Quebec Capitales. It will be "Expo Day" at Rapidz Stadium where former Expo greats Jim Fanning, Claude Raymond and Warren Cromartie will be in attendance along with long-time Expos announcer Jacques Doucet. The promotion will also feature Bill Young, the author of "Remembering the Montreal Expos" in attendance.
