ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 24, 2003) – Right-hander Mark Rutherford tossed eight strong innings and Juan Thomas went 3-4 with a solo home run to lead the Atlantic City Surf over the Bridgeport Bluefish, 8-2, Thursday evening at the Sandcastle.

The Surf offense provided more than enough run support for Rutherford (4-2), who allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking two for the victory in just his fourth start of the season.

After Raul Marval's sacrifice fly gave the Surf a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Thomas stepped up and ripped a Tim Cain breaking ball over the left field fence for his 13th home run of the season to put Atlantic City ahead 2-0 in the third.

Atlantic City tallied two more runs in the fourth on a Brody Jackson sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Lauro Felix.

The Surf broke the game open with four runs in the sixth, highlighted by Ric Johnson's two-run single with the bases loaded and a one-run base-hit by Thomas.

Brody Jackson and Chad Gambill had two hits apiece for the Surf while Marval had an RBI and scored two runs.

Cain (2-2) allowed four runs off five hits through four innings pitched to take the loss. Angel Espada hit a solo home run and Rolo Avila had an RBI single for Bridgport's two runs.

The Surf improve to 7-6 on the season while the Bluefish drop to 7-7.

ON DECK: The Surf and the Bluefish conclude their series on Friday, July 25, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. A fireworks show sponsored by Spirit Airlines will follow the game.
