American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
More and more signs of the Nashua Pride and Atlantic League's successes and acceptance are popping up in all directions.
From a media perspective, in addition to the superb regular coverage provided by the likes of WMUR, The Telegraph and The Union Leader, Pride baseball and the Atlantic League have been making new strides in 2003. Player, coach and mascot appearances, sometimes as many as three a day, are happening constantly, and many receive press coverage. These included the Pride's summer reading program with the Nashua Library and the recent Fairytale Festival with pitcher Dave Richards at Greeley Park in Nashua, as well as appearances by Butch Hobson at Nashua's Barnes and Noble and Prime Time visiting the American Lung Association earlier in the season.
The Pride and Holman Stadium have also been attracting top quality regional and national media as well. Earlier in the season, CN8 featured Rickey Henderson's first appearance in Nashua, including a live interview with the Telegraph's Tom King from our press box, NECN brought Butch Hobson and Paxton Crawford in for an interview, and recently Pride GM Todd Marlin was a guest on the Eddie Andleman Show on Sporting News Radio 1510 The Zone.
Rickey Henderson's All-Star game exploits brought the Pride and the League national attention, as the story was picked up by media outlets nationwide (and internationally as well), and Curtis Pride's return to the big leagues was also a major story. The Pride will also be featured in upcoming issues of ESPN the Magaize and Baseball America. The Boston Red Sox have also given Butch and the Pride a pat on the back, including a large feature story on Butch in the fourth edition of the 2003 Red Sox Magazine that includes a section on Butch's career with Nashua and a photo of Butch and Owlman Rick Wise in Pride gear. In-stadium visits by notables like Presidential candidate Dick Gephardt and Wrestling legend Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine have also paid dividends.
All of these factors combined with a first-half title and a second-to-none stadium and overall affordable entertainment experience have helped push the Pride's average attendance close to the goal of 2,000 fans per game, as high as 1,985 last weekend. So be sure to come on out and help the Pride reach their goals...2000 fans per game, and a second Atlantic League title...priceless.

Paxton Crawford takes the hill for Nashua against the 'Sharks David Moraga...the Pride will look to avenge last night's 3-1 loss, which featured a strong eight-inning performance from Brian Smtih and a solo HR by Damian Sapp.

AROUND THE LEAGUE
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 24, 2003) â Long Island Ducks team officials today announced that the St. Louis Cardinals have purchased the contract of starting pitcher Pedro Borbon, Jr. from the Ducks. Borbon will be assigned to the team's AAA affiliate, the Memphis Redbirds. In five starts and 31 appearances with the Ducks, Borbon was 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA. Over the past month, he successfully made the transition from reliever to starter, going 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA in five starts after spending the previous 11 seasons in a relief role on both the minor and Major League levels.
Taking Borbon's place on the Ducks roster will be outfielder Norm Hutchins, whom the Ducks recalled from Pennsylvania on Thursday. This season with the Road Warriors, Hutchins was batting .277 with 10 steals in 137 at bats. 2003 is his tenth season in professional baseball and first with the Ducks. Hutchins has reached the AAA level four times, most recently with the Durham Bulls of the International League in 2001. With the Midland Rock Hounds of the Texas League (AA-Oakland) in 1998, he hit .312 with 10 homers, 50 RBIs and 32 steals in 394 at bats. Originally a second round draft choice of the Anaheim Angels in the 1994 draft, the 27-year old was born in White Plains and currently resides in Greenburgh, New York.
